Freida Pinto's Unaccustomed Earth Brings Love, Loss and Secrets to Netflix

Love, loss and belonging are at the heart of Netflix India’s upcoming drama series Unaccustomed Earth, which is set to premiere on December 17. Netflix India announced the series with a set of working stills featuring Freida Pinto and wrote, “Love. Loss. Belonging. Watch Unaccustomed Earth, inspired by the internationally beloved Jhumpa Lahiri short story collection, out 17 December, only on Netflix.” The series brings Lahiri’s celebrated stories to the screen in an eight-episode adaptation exploring family, relationships and the complicated emotional lives of immigrants caught between the world they left behind and the one they have built.

Freida Pinto leads the series as Parul Chaudhury, a wife and mother whose carefully constructed life takes an unexpected turn following a cancer diagnosis. Her character carries the weight of choices made years earlier, including giving up her first love during college after choosing to respect her father’s wishes. The diagnosis forces Parul to look back at those decisions and confront possibilities she had once left behind. Her journey forms one of the emotional anchors of the series as she begins questioning what she wants from life and what it means to truly belong somewhere.

Parul’s story takes her and her family from India to Cambridge, Massachusetts, a place that already holds a special significance for her. Having previously experienced a strong sense of belonging there, returning to Cambridge gives Parul an opportunity to reconsider the direction her life has taken. However, her decisions do not exist in isolation. As she begins exploring paths she had once abandoned, the consequences ripple through her family as well as the wider Indian-American Bengali community around her. The series promises to examine those interconnected lives through relationships, secrets and emotional choices.

The newly released stills offer glimpses of the world Unaccustomed Earth is building around Parul. In the images, Pinto is seen in a range of emotional and intimate moments, including a prayer-like scene, a quiet autumn encounter with a male co-star, an office conversation and a candlelit dinner. Together, the stills hint at a story that moves between personal relationships and the larger questions of identity, family and belonging. The series is showrun by Madhuri Shekar, while Jhumpa Lahiri and John Wells serve as executive producers, bringing together literary and television perspectives for the adaptation.

The ensemble cast further expands the interconnected world of the series. Siddharth plays Amit, while Indraneil Sengupta appears as Jai. The cast also includes Parveen Kaur as Nina, Sarayu Blue as Ruma, Justin Bartha as Adam, Adi Roy as Kaushik, Iyla Sundarsingh Mckaig as Hema and Jayant Kripalani as Pranab. Their characters form part of the wider network of lives through which the series explores love, family and the immigrant experience. At its core, the story is set against an Indian-American Bengali community in Cambridge, allowing the series to examine how personal histories continue to shape people even after they have built lives far from where they began.

With Unaccustomed Earth, Netflix is bringing one of Jhumpa Lahiri’s internationally recognised literary works into a new visual format while retaining its focus on intimate human experiences. Freida Pinto’s Parul stands at the centre of a story about a woman forced to reassess her past after a life-changing diagnosis, but the series expands beyond one individual to explore the connections between families and communities. Set to arrive on Netflix on December 17, the eight-episode drama brings together an ensemble cast and a story shaped by love, difficult choices, family secrets and the enduring search for a place to call home.
