Richie Mehta’s ‘Phoolan’ Gets a Standing Ovation at TIFF 2026 World Premiere

Richie Mehta’s much-awaited Hindi action drama ‘Phoolan’ made a powerful debut at the 51st Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF 2026), earning a standing ovation at its world premiere. Presented at the prestigious Princess of Wales Theatre, the Amazon MGM Studios production was screened in TIFF’s coveted Special Presentations section, putting the spotlight firmly on one of the most anticipated Indian films at this year’s festival.

Written, directed and produced by International Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Richie Mehta, ‘Phoolan’ explores a defining 48-hour siege from the life of Phoolan Devi. The film stars newcomer Sneha Kumari in the central role and draws from Phoolan Devi’s autobiography to explore a crucial chapter in her extraordinary and turbulent life. Rather than attempting to cover her entire journey, the film focuses on a tightly contained period, giving the story an intense action-drama framework.
