Patna, Sep 17 (SocialNews.XYZ) Prime Minister Narendra Modi's birthday is being celebrated across the country, with the BJP organising a series of programmes to mark the occasion. The celebrations, however, have triggered a political controversy in Bihar, where the state is grappling with widespread flooding.
The BJP-led Bihar government has issued directions for lamps to be lit at various government institutions and educational establishments to mark PM Modi's birthday.
The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) has questioned the expenditure on the celebrations at a time when thousands of families are affected by floods across Bihar.
RJD MLA from Maner Bhai Virendra, while extending birthday wishes to Prime Minister Modi, criticised the scale of the celebrations and argued that public funds should instead be used for flood relief.
“I wish Prime Minister Modi a long life, but the way his birthday is being celebrated stands in stark contrast to the situation in Bihar and several other states, where lakhs of people are struggling with floods and receiving no relief,” Bhai Virendra said.
He alleged that flood victims were facing severe hardships, with livestock being swept away, houses collapsing, and families losing loved ones, while adequate assistance had not reached many affected areas.
Referring to the appeal to light earthen lamps, the RJD leader questioned the rationale behind spending money on the celebrations amid the crisis.
“Mustard oil is currently selling at Rs 200 per litre, and vast quantities of it will be burned in lamps. Had that same money been given to flood victims, it would have truly benefited them,” he said.
Bhai Virendra also criticised the reported instructions to schools and government offices to participate in the celebrations.
“Teachers in schools are being asked to light lamps, and directives have been issued to light lamps at block offices. The country is reeling under a mountain of debt; it is shameful that such activities are being carried out using borrowed money,” he said.
The RJD MLA went on to launch a broader attack on the Prime Minister, alleging that the government had failed to adequately address inflation, unemployment and crime.
Bhai Virendra said he wished the Prime Minister well but urged him to reconsider government-backed birthday celebrations and focus resources on addressing the problems faced by flood-affected people.
The remarks have added to the political debate in Bihar over the BJP government's celebrations amid the ongoing flood situation in several parts of the state.
