Those who spend their working lives serving others were themselves served, celebrated and placed at the centre of attention during a special Housekeepers’ Week dinner at Espace Bar and Café, attended by President Dr Patrick Herminie.
More than 50 housekeepers working within the Ministry of Health across Mahe gathered for the celebration, which recognised their contribution to maintaining clean, safe and welcoming environments across the country’s health facilities.
Addressing the housekeepers, President Herminie placed particular emphasis on respect for the profession, reminding those present that the work they do carries dignity and contributes directly to the reputation of their respective establishments.
“Housekeeping is a profession that deserves respect. The work you do and the standards you maintain contribute directly to the reputation of the establishments you represent. You should take pride in your profession and in the important contribution you make every day,” the President said.
He also called for a change in the way housekeeping is perceived, stressing that recognition should extend beyond occasions such as Housekeepers’ Week. He encouraged employers, colleagues and the wider public to appreciate the people behind the work and the responsibility they carry.
The Minister for Health Dr Marvin Fanny, who joined the President for the celebration, also paid tribute to the housekeepers and highlighted the importance of recognising both their professional and human contribution.
“Behind every clean, safe and welcoming environment are people whose dedication and effort make it possible. Tonight is about ensuring that our housekeepers know their work is seen, their contribution is valued and they are respected,” the Minister said.
The evening carried a deliberate reversal of roles. Housekeepers who are accustomed to preparing spaces, attending to others and ensuring that people feel comfortable were given the opportunity to sit back, be served and enjoy an occasion dedicated to them.
Beyond the dinner, the celebration provided a space for colleagues to come together, share experiences and take pride in a profession that plays an important role across workplaces and service establishments.
