Guwahati, Sep 13 (SocialNews.XYZ) Assam Congress leader Aminul Islam on Sunday questioned the outcome of the BRICS Summit for India, asking whether the high-level meeting had addressed key strategic concerns, including India-China relations, the 2020 Galwan Valley clash and developments surrounding the Strait of Hormuz.
Speaking to reporters here, Islam said the Union government should clarify whether the summit had produced any tangible outcomes on issues directly affecting India's national and strategic interests.
The Congress leader questioned whether there had been any substantive discussion on the current state of India-China relations and whether concerns arising from the Galwan Valley clash had figured in the deliberations.
"Are there any better situations in Indo-China relations? Is there any discussion on the Galwan situation, or how the water level in the Brahmaputra has dropped by 40 per cent since 2022?" Islam said.
He also raised the issue of the Brahmaputra river, claiming that its water level had declined by 40 per cent since 2022.
He linked the concern to India's wider strategic challenges involving China and questioned whether such matters received adequate attention during the summit.
Islam said that discussions at the BRICS Summit should go beyond broad declarations and focus on issues that have a direct bearing on India's security, economy and strategic interests.
Referring to the participation of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian at the summit, the Congress leader also questioned whether India had held substantive discussions with Tehran on developments concerning the Strait of Hormuz.
The Strait of Hormuz is a critical global energy and shipping route, and developments in the region can have wider implications for energy supplies and international trade.
Islam used the occasion to launch a broader attack on the Union government's foreign policy, alleging that India's international relations had weakened in recent years.
"Our Prime Minister (Narendra Modi) is just taking photos. India's international relations are basically very bad now. Foreign policy is gradually deteriorating," he said.
The Congress leader questioned whether the BRICS Summit would ultimately deliver concrete benefits for India and called for greater clarity from the Union government on the outcomes of the meeting.
"That is why the question is whether the BRICS Summit brings something positive for India or not. That should be made clear first," Islam said.
His remarks came after the BRICS Summit, hosted by India, brought together leaders of the expanded grouping amid a complex geopolitical environment and discussions on global economic and strategic issues.
Islam's comments focused on whether the summit's broader diplomatic engagements translated into concrete progress on matters he described as central to India's national interests.
