Shaheen Bhatt Reveals What Drew Her to Don't Be Shy and Its Message for Audiences

Shaheen Bhatt and Alia Bhatt recently joined the entire cast and crew of Don’t Be Shy at the film’s trailer launch, where they spoke about the coming-of-age romantic comedy and what they hope audiences take away from it. As producers, the Bhatt sisters are backing the project under their banner Eternal Sunshine Productions. During the media interaction, Shaheen opened up about her first reaction to the story and explained why its take on growing up, love and finding oneself felt particularly familiar.

Speaking about what went through her mind when Shri first brought the story to her, Shaheen said, “I remember thinking how familiar it felt.” She explained that people often grow up with a fixed idea of what their lives are supposed to look like, including what success should mean and even whom they might eventually love. According to Shaheen, Don’t Be Shy takes that familiar expectation of having life neatly planned and turns it into something “messy, romantic, chaotic, fun, and ultimately something just really hopeful.”

That sentiment sits at the heart of Don’t Be Shy, which follows 20-year-old Shyamili “Shy” Das. Shy has carefully planned her life, but everything changes when her long-term boyfriend suddenly breaks up with her. What begins as a desire to get revenge takes an unexpected turn when she develops a friendship with Tara, her former boyfriend’s new girlfriend. The unusual relationship becomes part of Shy’s journey towards discovering that life rarely follows the script people create for themselves.

The film’s coming-of-age story also explores the uncertainty that comes with entering adulthood, when relationships, ambitions and personal identity can all feel like moving targets. Shaheen touched on that idea while discussing what she wants viewers to carry with them after watching the film. “Ultimately life is messy, chaotic, and the part of growing up that's important is not having it all figured out, but just learning to be less afraid to be yourself,” she said. Her words capture the film’s larger message about accepting uncertainty instead of constantly trying to control it.

Don’t Be Shy introduces fresh faces Aarushi Bajaj as Shy, along with Ansh Duggal, Bianca Arora and Piyush Khati, while also bringing established names such as Neha Dhupia and Anurag Basu into the ensemble. With its mix of romance, friendship, humour and the emotional confusion of early adulthood, the film appears to be aiming for a breezy yet relatable take on growing up. The trailer launch gave the team an opportunity to underline that the story is not simply about a breakup, but about what can happen when carefully planned lives take an unexpected detour.

Produced by Alia Bhatt and Shaheen Bhatt under Eternal Sunshine Productions, Don’t Be Shy is set to premiere globally on Amazon Prime Video on September 25, 2026. With a new generation of actors at the centre and a story built around love, friendship and self-discovery, the film could strike a chord with anyone who has ever felt pressured to have their future figured out. And if Shaheen’s message is anything to go by, Don’t Be Shy wants its audience to do something much simpler: embrace the chaos and be a little less afraid of being themselves.
