Chennai, Sep 12 (SocialNews.XYZ) The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has asked property owners to pay their outstanding and current property tax dues by September 30, as the civic body seeks to recover Rs 847.80 crore amid mounting financial commitments.
According to the corporation, 6,03,232 property owners across Chennai are yet to settle their tax liabilities. The pending amount includes both arrears from previous periods and dues payable for the current assessment cycle.
The GCC has assessed 14,15,771 properties for tax in the city. Of these, 8,12,539 property owners have cleared their dues without leaving any arrears. However, a sizeable number of pending payments continues to affect the corporation’s finances and its ability to meet expenditure on essential civic services.
The fresh appeal comes a few months after the GCC conducted a special property tax collection drive in July to improve compliance and recover pending amounts.
Despite the campaign, arrears and current dues remain high, prompting the corporation to issue another reminder ahead of the September 30 deadline.
The civic body is facing considerable financial pressure, with its total bill liability for the 2026-27 financial year standing at Rs 3,434.72 crore.
Timely property tax collection is crucial for maintaining cash flow and meeting expenses connected with sanitation, roads, stormwater drains, street lighting and other public services.
GCC Commissioner G.S. Sameeran urged property owners to clear both current and long-pending dues within the stipulated period and cooperate with the GCC in ensuring the uninterrupted delivery of essential services.
The corporation has provided several online and digital payment options to make the process easier. Property owners can pay through the official GCC website or its mobile application. Payments can also be made using the WhatsApp payment link, the QR code printed on property tax receipts, and the corporation’s WhatsApp chatbot.
Residents seeking to use the chatbot facility can contact the GCC through the number 9445161913. The digital options are intended to help taxpayers avoid visiting corporation offices and complete payments quickly.
The GCC has appealed to owners not to wait until the last day and to verify whether any previous arrears remain against their properties. It said prompt payment by taxpayers would strengthen the corporation’s capacity to meet its financial obligations and continue civic works across Chennai.
