New Delhi, Sep 12 (SocialNews.XYZ) After senior Congress leader and former Uttarakhand Chief Minister Harish Rawat resigned from two party posts held by him, leaders of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) on Saturday termed it as a "cover up", while the grand old party alleged that he was being "intimidated".
Rawat resigned from his posts at the State Congress Committee and the Congress Working Committee after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) seized large amount of cash and jewellery from his personal assistant (PA) Chandan Singh Jeena.
The former Uttarakhand Chief Minister has, however, denied the allegations.
Speaking to IANS, JD-U National Spokesperson Rajiv Ranjan said: "Resignation can only be used as cover-up. There should a thorough probe into the incident as it is preliminarily coming across as a case of corruption."
"Given the crucial roles played by Harish Rawat during the regime of various Congress governments in Uttarakhand, the recovery of gold and cash from his PA's residence can indicate a lot of things about the relationship. That is why a thorough investigation is required and action should be taken accordingly," he added.
Bihar Minister Dilip Jaiswal called the ED's action as "legal procedure".
"Such legal actions keeps taking place... the law will take its course," he told IANS.
Madhya Pradesh Minister Vishvas Sarang referred to Congress as "sailing ship".
"The party is full of stubbornness and it is the Congress' habit to only prioritise a particular family. So why would a person with self respect stay there?" he remarked.
Meanwhile, Congress MP Imran Masood alleged that attempts are being made to intimidate the former Uttarakhand Chief Minister.
"One shouldn't be intimidated by such tactics. They are trying to intimidate. The amount of money recovered is something people usually have; it's not like several crores of rupees were found that it became such a huge issue," he told IANS.
Congress MP Pramod Tiwari said Rawat resigned on "moral grounds".
Echoing that the cash recovered might be available with ordinary people as well, Tiwari said: "He (Harish Rawat) has taken the moral high ground and decided to set an example."
Congress leader Udit Raj also said: "Harish Rawat should not hold himself responsible for it, nor should the Congress be blamed."
