Gyllenhaal plays reclusive New York architect Tate Gordon, a man attempting to rebuild his life after receiving treatment for acute depression and dealing with the devastating loss of his sister. Looking for a fresh beginning, Tate travels to a small coastal town in Cape Cod to design a summer home for his best friend. What begins as a straightforward professional assignment soon takes a strange turn when he encounters Wren, played by Dynevor, a mysterious young woman who completely disrupts his carefully controlled existence.
The first teaser hints at a love story that is anything but ordinary. Wren is described as someone unlike anyone Tate has ever met, and her presence slowly pulls him out of his emotional shell. But as their connection deepens, Tate finds himself questioning the rational beliefs he has relied on to make sense of life, grief and loss. Staying at a historic bed and breakfast only adds to the atmosphere, with the picturesque coastal setting hiding something much darker underneath.
Remain marks an unprecedented collaboration between Shyamalan and Sparks, combining Sparks’ trademark emotional storytelling with the filmmaker’s fascination with suspense, supernatural elements and unexpected twists. Shyamalan directs the film and co-wrote the screenplay, while the story was developed by Shyamalan and Sparks. The project is also based on the Nicholas Sparks novel of the same name, published in 2025, giving fans of the author another screen adaptation to look forward to.
The cast alongside Gyllenhaal and Dynevor includes Ashley Walters, Julie Hagerty and Jay O. Sanders. Behind the camera, Adolpho Veloso serves as cinematographer, bringing the coastal world of Remain to life. With its combination of romance, grief and a deadly mystery hanging over the town, the movie looks set to occupy an unusual space between a Nicholas Sparks love story and a classic Shyamalan mystery.
Warner Bros has scheduled Remain for release on February 5, 2027, and the first teaser has already set up an intriguing question: is Tate falling in love with Wren, or is he being drawn into something far more dangerous? With Jake Gyllenhaal and Phoebe Dynevor at the center of a romance surrounded by supernatural secrets, and Shyamalan and Sparks joining forces for the first time, Remain could be one of 2027’s most unexpected genre blends.
