Medininagar (Jharkhand), Sep 9 (SocialNews.XYZ) A newlywed woman was found dead under suspicious circumstances in Jharkhand's Palamu district, with her family accusing her in-laws of murdering her and attempting to pass it off as a case of suicide.
The deceased, identified as Vaishnavi Devi, was found hanging from a noose in a room at her matrimonial home near Redma Chowk in Medininagar under the Town police station limits late on Tuesday night.
Vaishnavi, a resident of Uttar Pradesh's Sonbhadra district, had married Suraj Gupta, a resident of Medininagar, around 10 months ago. According to her family, she had been subjected to harassment over demands for additional dowry soon after the marriage.
The incident came to light on Wednesday when members of the husband's family brought Vaishnavi to the Medinirai Medical College and Hospital (MMCH) in a critical condition. However, doctors at the hospital declared her dead.
Her family has alleged that after her death was confirmed, the in-laws attempted to remove the body from the hospital quietly. However, alert personnel at the MMCH police outpost intervened and stopped them, following which information about the incident was conveyed to the woman's family.
Relatives of the deceased arrived in Medininagar from the Audimod police station area of Sonbhadra district on Wednesday and levelled serious allegations against the in-laws.
Vaishnavi's maternal uncle, Jitendra, claimed that she had been continuously harassed over dowry demands since her marriage.
He said Vaishnavi had spoken normally with her mother over the phone at around 9 p.m. on Tuesday and had not mentioned any stress or dispute. A few hours later, however, the family was informed of her death, raising serious suspicions about the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Police have taken custody of the body and sent it for post-mortem examination. Officials said a detailed investigation is underway based on the statements and allegations made by the woman's family.
