While peace support operations often highlight frontline deployments and field patrols, effective coordination and communication behind the scenes remain just as important to mission success. At the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) Sector 2, Sergeant John Muchui plays a critical role in ensuring the efficient flow of information between units and command structures.
Serving as Chief Clerk, Sgt Muchui is responsible for coordinating and communicating operational matters between sub-units and the headquarters, a task that demands accuracy, discipline, and constant attention to detail.
“I joined the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) in 2008,” he said.
Sgt Muchui’s journey into military service began during his childhood, inspired by the professionalism and discipline he witnessed from KDF personnel during public ceremonies and military documentaries.
“As a young boy, I used to watch KDF performing ceremonial duties in parades,” he recalled. “I admired them and hoped that one day I would also perform those duties. I also watched documentaries about military operations, and that inspired me to join the military so I could take part in such responsibilities.”,
That childhood admiration eventually became a lifelong career dedicated to military service and operational support.
Within AUSSOM Sector 2 in Kismayo, Sgt Muchui’s work focuses on ensuring smooth communication and timely reporting across operational structures.
“My duty as Chief Clerk is to coordinate and communicate operational matters from sub-units to higher headquarters,” he explained. “This includes matters related to logistics, communication, and operational reporting.”
Although often carried out away from public attention, these responsibilities are essential for maintaining effective command and control within the mission.
Operating in a complex mission environment also comes with technical difficulties. For Sergeant Muchui, these obstacles have not deterred his team from carrying out their duties. He continues to ensure that reports and operational updates are delivered efficiently to support decision-making at higher command levels.
Reflecting on his deployment, Sergeant Muchui said one of his greatest achievements has been successfully serving as a communication bridge between operational units and mission leadership.
“I am proud that I have been coordinating, reporting, and communicating operational matters in a timely manner,” he said. “This has enabled higher leadership to act quickly on important issues, helping us achieve our mandate and contribute to a stable and peaceful Somalia.”
His work highlights the importance of administrative and communication personnel within peace support operations, ensuring that the mission functions effectively.
As AUSSOM continues to support peace and stabilisation efforts in Somalia, personnel like Sgt Muchui demonstrate that every role within the mission contributes to the broader goal of security and stability.
Through commitment, professionalism, and operational coordination, he continues to play a valuable part in supporting the mission’s success in Sector 2 and beyond.
