Anil Kapoor celebrates 25 years of Nayak says Shivaji Rao still speaks to people

Anil Kapoor is taking a nostalgic trip back to one of the most memorable films of his career as Nayak: The Real Hero completes 25 years. The actor shared a special video montage on social media marking the milestone and reflected on why the story of Shivaji Rao continues to resonate with audiences even after two and a half decades.

Released on September 7, 2001, Nayak featured Kapoor as Shivaji Rao, a television journalist who finds himself thrust into the world of politics and eventually becomes the Chief Minister. What begins as an ordinary man’s unexpected journey into power soon becomes a story about corruption, accountability and what happens when someone actually decides to use political power for the people.

Looking back at the character, Anil Kapoor explained that it was never simply the transformation from a common man into a powerful politician that attracted him. He wrote, “25 years of Nayak. What drew me to Shivaji Rao was never just the journey from a common man to the Chief Minister. It was what he chose to do once he got there, to use the power he had to make a difference to the people.”

For Kapoor, playing Shivaji Rao was therefore much more than taking on another film role. The actor described the opportunity as a privilege, particularly because of the purpose at the heart of the story. He added, “To portray a role with that kind of purpose was a privilege and perhaps that is why Nayak continues to find its way back to people even after 25 years.” His words underline why the film has remained a familiar reference point for audiences whenever conversations around political leadership and public responsibility arise.

The anniversary video brings those memories back to life with a montage of powerful moments from the film. Kapoor’s Shivaji Rao features prominently alongside Amrish Puri, who played the antagonist, while intense crowd sequences and dramatic scenes capture the larger-than-life tone of the political drama. The montage ends with a typewriter-style visual spelling out “25 years of Nayak”, giving the celebration a suitably nostalgic finish.

Kapoor also reflected on the central idea that continues to make the film relevant. He said, “The love for your country, and the desire to do better for its people will never be irrelevant, and I will always be proud to have been a part of such a story.” It is that combination of patriotism, idealism and the desire for change that has allowed Nayak to remain part of popular conversation long after its original theatrical release.

Directed by S Shankar and produced by AM Rathnam, Nayak featured a strong ensemble cast including Rani Mukerji, Amrish Puri, Johnny Lever, Paresh Rawal, Pooja Batra, Shivaji Satam, Neena Kulkarni and Saurabh Shukla.
