Imphal, Sep 4 (SocialNews.XYZ) Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh on Friday strongly condemned the grenade attack on the residence of Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader Keisham Meghachandra Singh in Thoubal district, asserting that violence against elected representatives has no place in a democracy and will not be tolerated.
The blast happened near the gate of the Congress leader's residence at Yairipok Bishnu Naha in Wangkhem constituency in Thoubal district on Thursday evening.
Taking to X, the Chief Minister wrote: “I strongly condemn the grenade attack on the residence of Shri K. Meghachandra Singh, Congress Legislature Party Leader and MLA of Wangkhem Assembly Constituency, which occurred last evening at Yairipok Bishnu Naha, Thoubal.” “Such acts of violence against elected representatives are unacceptable and will not be tolerated. I have directed the police to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice at the earliest,” Khemchand Singh said.
The blast is suspected to have been caused by an explosive thrown by an unknown miscreant. The identity and motive of the perpetrator are yet to be established. The police visited the spot immediately and conducted a search operation.
Meanwhile, a sit-in protest was held on Friday against the grenade attack at the Congress leader’s residence. The protest was organised by the All Yairipok Apunba Ima Lup (AYAIL), with participants condemning the use of explosives in a residential area and expressing concern over public safety.
Earlier, Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh, on August 28, visited the residence of former Minister and sitting BJP MLA Sapam Ranjan Singh at Konthoujam Mayai Leikai in Imphal West district following a bomb blast at his residence.
The Chief Minister later, in a post on social media, strongly condemned the attack. “I strongly condemn such a senseless and barbaric attack on the residence of a people's representative. “This act of violence is an attack on our democracy, and the perpetrators will be brought to justice soon,” the Chief Minister said.
According to the MLA, the incident occurred on August 28 when he was present at his residence. The bomb exploded in the backyard of the house, leaving a small crater on the ground and causing minor damage to the walls of the compound. Police have registered a case and initiated an investigation into the incident.
