Guwahati, Sep 4 (SocialNews.XYZ) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday recalled the signing of the historic Karbi Peace Accord, describing it as a pivotal milestone that transformed the socio-political landscape of the state and ushered in a new era of peace and development in Karbi Anglong.

In a post on X, Sarma said the agreement marked a decisive shift from years of conflict towards lasting harmony while addressing the long-standing aspirations of the Karbi people without compromising Assam's territorial integrity.

“Today, we commemorate the historic signing of the Karbi Peace Accord -- a pivotal milestone that forever transformed the socio-political landscape of Assam and turned a page from conflict to lasting harmony,” he said.

The Chief Minister said the accord had opened new opportunities for the region, ranging from infrastructure development and targeted tribal welfare programmes to avenues for youth, art and local entrepreneurship.

“As Karbi Anglong marches ahead on the path of prosperity, we salute the spirit of peace and unity that made this agreement possible. A shining example of how dialogue builds a resilient future,” Sarma said.

He reiterated that the Assam government remained committed to the rapid development of the region and the welfare of its people while protecting their distinct identity.

The Karbi Peace Accord was signed in New Delhi on September 4, 2021, between the Centre, the Assam government and representatives of Karbi groups, including several armed organisations.

The agreement followed years of insurgency and violence involving Karbi militant outfits in the Karbi Anglong region.

The accord provided for the rehabilitation and resettlement of armed cadres, greater administrative and political powers for the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council, and a special development package for the region.

The settlement was aimed at bringing former militants into the mainstream and creating conditions for sustained peace and development in the hill districts.

Following the agreement, hundreds of cadres associated with different Karbi armed groups laid down arms and joined the peace process. The accord was seen as a major step towards addressing long-standing demands of the Karbi community through dialogue and constitutional mechanisms.
