Romanchakam Movie Review: Fun Friends, Forced Romance (Rating: 3.0)

Romanchakam attempts to blend romance, comedy and a little suspense into a youthful entertainer. Sumanth Prabhas and Ananthika Sanilkumar lead the film, with director Venu Gopal Reddy presenting a story built around modern dating, friendship and a series of unexpected complications.

The film follows Anvesh, a young entrepreneur who connects with Mythili through a dating app. When Mythili comes to Hyderabad to meet him, things take an unexpected turn, dragging Anvesh and his friends into a messy situation. What happens to Mythili and how the gang gets out of the trouble forms the core of the story.

Performances

Sumanth Prabhas is decent as the easy-going youngster and fits the youthful setting well. Ananthika Sanilkumar brings freshness to the romantic portions.

However, the real entertainment comes from the friends' gang. Narendra Ravi and Venkatesh Kakumanu provide several of the film's better comic moments, particularly when the screenplay shifts into situational comedy.

What Works

The friendship track and situational comedy are the biggest positives. The film occasionally gets into a Jathi Rathnalu-style zone, relying on silly situations, character reactions and buddy chemistry rather than a complicated plot.

The youthful setting and dating-app premise also give the movie a contemporary feel. Vasuki Vaibhav's music adds energy, with “Radha Ramana” standing out.

What Doesn't

The biggest problem is the writing.

The romantic track isn't strong enough to make us deeply invested in the lead pair, while some of the dramatic turns feel forced. The movie also takes too long to get going, and whenever it moves away from comedy into serious emotional territory, the momentum drops.

At 2 hours 22 minutes, the film could have benefited from tighter editing and a shorter runtime. There is a fun comedy buried inside the movie, but the screenplay takes too many detours to get there.

Verdict

Romanchakam is not a complete romantic entertainer, but it does have enough laughs to make it a reasonably enjoyable weekend watch.

The friends' gang and situational comedy work better than the love story, and the second half gets livelier once the chaos takes over. Don't expect a deeply satisfying romance or a tightly written thriller. Go in expecting a light-hearted youth comedy, and the film works better.

Romanchakam — fun in parts, messy overall.

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐ 3/5

Bottom Line: Watch it for the comedy and friends' gang; the romance could have been much better.
