Kunal Kemmu Says He Would Do It All Again While Talking About Vibe

Kunal Kemmu is once again taking on multiple responsibilities with Vibe, his upcoming Hindi action-comedy that marks his second directorial venture after Madgaon Express. Written, directed and co-produced by Kunal, the film sees him balancing life in front of and behind the camera while also managing the demands of production. Asked whether handling so many roles was difficult and if he would take on the challenge again, Kunal had a clear answer: “100%, I’d do it again.” For the filmmaker, enjoying the process matters more than worrying about how difficult the journey might become.

Kunal explained that his decision to direct comes down to how much he enjoys filmmaking. “I don’t do anything I don’t enjoy. Honestly, if I hadn’t enjoyed making Madgaon as a director, I wouldn’t have made it—even though it did well,” he said. Talking about acting and directing simultaneously, he added, “Everything is difficult at the start. But if you enjoy the process, you don't focus on the difficulties; you just go through the journey.” It is an approach that seems to have shaped his filmmaking journey, with Vibe allowing him to take an even bigger creative leap.

But how does an actor-director remain objective when he is also the person being directed? Kunal admitted that he relied largely on instinct. “Honestly, I played it by instinct. There’s no point overthinking it, because I’m the one deciding whether I’m being objective or not,” he said. “It’s up to the audience to watch it and say whether I got it right.” Rather than getting caught up in constantly judging his own performance, Kunal chose to trust his instincts and concentrate on bringing the character and the overall film together.

According to Kunal, the real challenge came with production, which is where producer Chirag Nihalani proved to be an important part of the team. Kunal had plenty of praise for his producing partner, saying, “Chirag is incredibly calm—that’s why I compared him to Dravid; temperamentally, he stays cool no matter what happens.” He then recalled that if Chirag ever appeared stressed on set, everyone knew the situation had become serious. During a major action sequence, Kunal approached him and said, “Chirag, things are getting a bit out of control; we might need an extra day.” Chirag's hilarious response? “Anything but that.” Kunal laughed while recalling the moment, adding that despite the chaos, the team eventually pulled it off.

At the centre of Vibe are Hardik and Bugs, played by Kunal Kemmu and Sparsh Shrivastava. The two friends are ordinary, clueless slackers who can barely keep their own chaotic lives under control. Their world takes a dramatic turn when they accidentally stumble upon a major national terrorist conspiracy. Suddenly, the unlikely duo finds itself responsible for something far bigger than either of them could have imagined. With absolutely no training for the job, Hardik and Bugs are forced into an unpredictable adventure where accidental heroism, friendship and survival become equally important.

For Kunal, the experience has clearly been demanding but rewarding, and he has no regrets about taking on so much responsibility. “I’d definitely do it again—especially now that I have a producing partner like Chirag. I would do all of this over and over again,” he said. At the same time, the filmmaker knows that ultimately the audience and the box office will have the final say. “The box office is the litmus test. If it works and you get more opportunities, then just keep doing this for the rest of your life,” Kunal added.

Produced by Kunal Kemmu and Chirag Nihalani, Vibe is an Amazon MGM Studios film and is scheduled to arrive in cinemas on September 18, 2026.
