I’m Game Movie Review: Stylish Fantasy Thriller That Takes Its Time to Find Its Game (Rating: 2.5)

I’m Game attempts to combine gambling, cricket betting, action, fantasy and revenge into a stylish commercial entertainer. Directed by Nahas Hidhayath, the film stars Dulquer Salmaan, Antony Varghese Pepe, Kayadu Lohar, Mysskin, Samyuktha Viswanathan, Vinay Forrt and Kathir.

The film follows Dan John (Dulquer Salmaan), a wealthy and reckless youngster addicted to gambling. His obsession with quick money eventually pushes him into the dangerous world of cricket betting, where things spiral out of control. What initially appears to be a straightforward gambling thriller takes a surprising supernatural turn involving a transplanted hand and a revenge-driven story.

Performances

Dulquer Salmaan brings plenty of style and energy to Dan John. The character's privileged, arrogant personality gives Dulquer room to play against his usual image, and he handles the swagger-heavy portions well.

But the film ultimately belongs to Antony Varghese Pepe. His Vicky track provides the emotional weight the movie desperately needs, and once his story becomes central, the film becomes considerably more engaging.

Mysskin gets an eccentric antagonist role, while Samyuktha Viswanathan makes an impact in her portions. Vinay Forrt and Kathir, however, don't get enough material to make much of an impression.

What Works

The biggest strength is the concept. The supernatural hand angle is an interesting surprise and gives what initially looks like a conventional gambling thriller a completely different direction.

The first half has style, energy and some impressive action. The production design, cinematography and Jakes Bejoy's background score add considerably to the big-screen experience.

The film also deserves credit for keeping its fantasy element relatively under wraps during promotions, making the reveal more effective in theatres.

What Doesn't Work

The screenplay is the major problem.

The movie takes considerable time establishing Dan's extravagant lifestyle, gambling addiction and world, but much of this doesn't contribute enough to the eventual story. Once the fantasy element arrives, the film initially struggles to find the right tone.

Some of the scenes involving Dan's battle with the hand are played for comedy, but they don't always land. The narrative feels like two different movies stitched together, rather than one cohesive story.

The second half becomes more predictable, although the Vicky portions provide the emotional and dramatic boost the film needs. A tighter edit could have made the overall experience considerably better.

Verdict

I’m Game is an ambitious attempt to mix gambling, cricket betting, fantasy and revenge with mainstream action. It doesn't completely come together, but there is enough style, action and novelty to keep the film watchable.

Dulquer brings the swagger, but Antony Varghese brings the soul.

The film works best once it moves away from the superficial glamour of Dan's world and gets into Vicky's emotional journey. Those expecting a slick, consistently thrilling commercial entertainer may find the uneven screenplay disappointing.

I’m Game — an interesting concept trapped inside an uneven screenplay.

⭐ Rating: 2.5/5

Bottom Line: Stylish first half, intriguing fantasy twist and a strong Antony Varghese performance, but the screenplay and pacing hold it back.
