Ahmedabad, Sep 2 (SocialNews.XYZ) Ahmedabad Customs officials on Wednesday seized 1.928 kg of hydroponic marijuana allegedly concealed in specially created cavities inside trolley bags and arrested a husband and wife who arrived from Bangkok, marking the second such seizure at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport (SVPIA) in two days.
Acting on passenger profiling and X-ray scanning, officers of the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of Ahmedabad Customs intercepted the two passengers, who arrived on Thai Airways flight TG-343 from Bangkok.
The passengers, both 50-year-old residents of Vadodara, were subjected to a detailed examination of their baggage. During the examination, officials detected concealed layers created inside the trolley bags.
On opening the fake layers, they found green-coloured substances concealed in five vacuum-packed transparent polythene packets in each of the two bags.
Preliminary testing of the recovered substance indicated the presence of "ganja" (hydroponic marijuana). The 10 packets together contained 1,928 grams of hydroponic marijuana, according to Ahmedabad Customs.
The contraband was seized under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985, and both passengers were arrested. Further investigation is underway.
The seizure came a day after Ahmedabad Customs intercepted a Myanmar-origin foreign national arriving from Ho Chi Minh City and seized 6,073.7 grams of hydroponic marijuana allegedly concealed in a trolley bag.
In that case, the passenger had arrived on August 31 on flight VJ-1805.
The interception followed passenger profiling, X-ray scanning and a signal from a sniffer dog.
During the baggage examination, officers detected a specially created cavity or fake layer inside the trolley bag, where five vacuum-packed transparent polythene packets containing a green-coloured substance were concealed.
Preliminary testing indicated that the substance was ganja. The 6.073 kg contraband was seized under the relevant provisions of the NDPS Act, and the passenger was arrested.
With the latest seizure, Ahmedabad Customs has reported two hydroponic marijuana seizures within two days, involving a combined 8,001.7 grams of the contraband and three arrests.
