New Delhi, Sep 1 (SocialNews.XYZ) Shares of Maruti Suzuki India fell more than 4 per cent on Tuesday after the automaker reported a 10 per cent sequential decline in total sales to 219,220 units in August, making the stock the top loser on the Nifty.
During noon trade, Maruti Suzuki India shares were trading 4 per cent lower at Rs 13,010 apiece. The decline came after the company reported record total sales of 241,421 units in July 2026.
The Nifty Auto index was also trading 0.6 per cent lower, with Maruti Suzuki leading the losses, followed by Sona Comstar and Bosch.
Despite the sequential decline, Maruti Suzuki's domestic passenger vehicle sales showed strong year-on-year growth. Domestic passenger vehicle sales, excluding light commercial vehicles and OEM sales, increased to 176,971 units in August from 131,278 units in the same month last year.
Utility vehicles remained the biggest contributor to the passenger vehicle segment, with sales rising to 79,045 units in August from 54,043 units in August 2025. The category includes models such as Brezza, Ertiga, e Vitara, Fronx, Grand Vitara, Invicto, Jimny, Victoris and XL6.
Passenger car sales across the Mini and Compact plus Mid-Size categories stood at a combined 85,965 units in August, compared with 66,450 units a year earlier.
Within the Mini segment, Alto and S-Presso sales increased to 8,799 units from 6,853 units in August 2025. The Compact plus Mid-Size segment, comprising Baleno, Celerio, Ciaz, Dzire, Ignis, Swift and WagonR, recorded sales of 77,166 units, up from 59,597 units a year earlier.
Sales of the Eeco van also increased to 11,961 units in August from 10,785 units in the corresponding month last year.
Meanwhile, Mahindra & Mahindra reported a sharp 42 per cent year-on-year increase in total automobile sales, selling 107,648 vehicles to dealerships in India and overseas during August.
The company continued to see strong demand for its sports utility vehicles, with domestic SUV sales rising 50 per cent year on year to 59,257 units. Its domestic commercial vehicle despatches also increased 22 per cent to 27,415 units.
