After Kolkata, Howrah, Bengal govt plans ward expansion in Durgapur Municipal Corporation

Kolkata, Sep 1 (SocialNews.XYZ) The West Bengal government has begun the delimitation process in the Durgapur Municipal Corporation (DMC) in West Burdwan district, proposing to increase the number of wards from 43 to 53.

The move follows similar ward reorganisation exercises in the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) and the Howrah Municipal Corporation (HMC).

According to a notification issued by the state Municipal Affairs and Urban Development Department of the West Bengal government, the proposed delimitation will add 10 new wards to the DMC, taking the total number to 53. A copy of the notification has been sent to the West Bengal Election Commission, the District Magistrate of West Burdwan, the Commissioner of Durgapur Municipal Corporation and other concerned officials.

Following the change of government in the state, the administration headed by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has already undertaken ward reorganisation in KMC and HMC, with separate amendment bills being passed in the Assembly for the purpose.

In Kolkata, the draft delimitation proposal had suggested increasing the number of wards from 144 to 209, although the final figure is expected to reach 211. In Howrah, the draft proposal envisages raising the number of wards from 50 to 68.

The notification said the proposed increase in DMC wards has been worked out on the basis of five key parameters: population, population density, geographical considerations, historical significance and financial factors.

Welcoming the move, BJP MLA from Durgapur (Purba), Chandrasekhar Bandopadhyay, said the expansion would enable civic authorities to deliver services more efficiently.

"There has been no election in the DMC for the last four years. People have been facing difficulties in accessing civic services and public grievances have been mounting. The creation of new wards will help ensure quicker and more effective delivery of services," he said.
