Ahmedabad, Aug 30 (SocialNews.XYZ) Modern sports facilities are being developed at the Gujarat Institute of Prisons and Correctional Administration (GIPCA) in Ahmedabad with a view to supporting training requirements ahead of the proposed Olympics and Commonwealth Games in the city, Director General of Police (DGP) (Crime) K.L.N. Rao said on Sunday.
Speaking during the Prisons Department's National Sports Day 2026 celebrations at GIPCA, Rao added that the campus was undergoing modernisation under Phase-I through the Police Housing Corporation.
The upgraded facility will include smart classrooms, a computer laboratory and a library, besides other training infrastructure for officers and employees ranging from Jail Assistants to Deputy Superintendents.
"Sports are an excellent means of developing physical ability as well as team spirit and discipline," Rao said.
He added that modern grounds for different sports were also being developed on the GIPCA premises, keeping the Olympics and Commonwealth Games to be held in Ahmedabad in mind.
"The facilities would benefit trainees undergoing training at the institute," he said.
The event was organised as part of the Sports Authority of India's Nationwide Celebration of National Sports Day 2026, held from August 28 to 30 under the theme 'Khelega Bharat, Jitega Bharat'.
As part of the celebrations, zone-wise kabaddi and tug-of-war competitions were organised for officers and employees of the Prisons Department at GIPCA under Rao's chairmanship.
Rao also encouraged trainees currently undergoing the nine-month basic training programme to complete their training and perform their duties with dedication.
The celebrations also highlighted the performance of the Prisons Department's wrestlers at the DGP Cup 2026-27 Gujarat Police Wrestling Cluster Competition held at the Nadiad Sports Complex.
A total of 22 teams from across Gujarat participated in the competition.
Prisons Department players won 14 medals -- six gold, six silver and two bronze -- and secured the tournament's Champion Trophy.
Rao congratulated the players for their performance.
Meanwhile, the selection process for outstanding players from various prisons and GIPCA has been completed for the upcoming Gujarat Police DGP Cup Kabaddi (Men) 2026-27 competition.
