Ahmedabad, Aug 27 (SocialNews.XYZ) Gujarat Vidyapith held its 72nd convocation ceremony on Thursday, with 900 students from 18 departments across seven faculties receiving their degrees in the presence of Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah and Governor and Vidyapith Chancellor Acharya Devvrat.
The graduates included 441 women and 459 men, comprising 184 undergraduate students, 400 postgraduate students, 232 students from postgraduate programmes, 21 postgraduate diploma holders and 63 MPhil/PhD scholars.
Eleven students were honoured with the Kuladhipati Mandir Chandrak and Dhwaj Chandrak for achievements in areas including Gandhian values, social service, research and co-curricular activities.
Addressing the ceremony, Shah recalled his association with Gujarat Vidyapith and its library, where he said he had spent hours studying.
He described the campus as a place that had contributed to the freedom struggle and the development of a national education model. “Gandhi’s life message was relevant yesterday, is relevant today and will remain eternal in the future,” Shah said.
He said khadi was not merely clothing or an economic activity but represented concern for the last person in society. He also said the National Education Policy-2020 placed the mother tongue, skills and the Indian knowledge tradition at its core.
Urging graduates to set goals for the country, society, and the welfare of low-income people, Shah called on them to contribute to the vision of a developed India by 2047. "India is moving towards reconstruction by combining its indigenous foundations with modernity," he said.
Governor Acharya Devvrat, delivering the convocation address, said the ceremony is “not merely a celebration of receiving a degree, but a moment to accept one’s responsibility towards society after education”.
Referring to the Taittiriya Upanishad, Devvrat stressed family and social responsibility, urging students to respect parents and teachers and share their knowledge with those in need.
He also highlighted India’s cultural traditions and values reflected in the Vedas, Upanishads, Bhagavad Gita and Ramayana.
He urged students to distinguish truth from falsehood on social media and help build a developed India while carrying forward Gandhian values.
Vice-Chancellor Dr Harshad Patel said: "The Vidyapith provided students with academic education along with training in cleanliness, spinning, khadi, community living and social service.
Students could also learn 22 languages and receive training in AI skills and the Indian Knowledge System."
The ceremony was attended by public representatives, university officials, trustees, social and political leaders, students and parents.
