Described as a dark coming-of-age story with an eco-feminist edge, Bokshi appears to be taking a different route from conventional Indian horror. Instead of relying purely on jump scares, the film builds its atmosphere around mountain folklore, isolation and a mysterious prehistoric site hidden deep within the forests. The trailer hints at a story where the landscape itself becomes part of the horror, with the wilderness holding secrets that its characters may not be prepared to uncover.
At the centre of the story is Anahita, played by Prasanna Bisht, a troubled teenager dealing with the traumatic disappearance of her mother. Searching for answers and some sense of stability, Anahita finds support in her history teacher Shalini, portrayed by Mansi Multani. What begins as an unusual school excursion eventually takes a disturbing turn when the group encounters a mysterious location known as The Navel.
The discovery appears to awaken something ancient. As Anahita becomes increasingly drawn into the mystery surrounding the site, the line between folklore and reality begins to disappear. A terrifying folkloric witch known as Bokshi emerges as a central presence, forcing Anahita to confront forces that seem to have existed long before she arrived. The trailer keeps several details deliberately under wraps, making the supernatural mythology one of the film's biggest mysteries.
The film's cast also includes Siddharth Shaw, Dagi Ngomdir and other key performers, with Shernaz Patel lending her voice to the character of Bokshi. Prasanna Bisht leads the film as Anahita, while Mansi Multani's Shalini appears to be an important figure in the teenager's journey. The performances are set against the striking and sometimes unsettling landscapes of Sikkim, giving the film a visual identity that feels distinct from the familiar urban settings of many Indian horror movies.
Adding another layer to the project is its unusual multilingual approach. Bokshi uses Hindi, English and Nepali, along with a fictional language created specifically for the film called Boksirit. That detail suggests that the filmmakers have gone beyond simply borrowing elements of folklore and have instead attempted to create a larger mythology and cultural world around the story.
The film has already travelled through the international festival circuit before its Indian theatrical release. Bokshi premiered at the International Film Festival Rotterdam in 2025 and was subsequently showcased at genre-focused festivals including Sitges in Spain, the Neuchâtel International Fantastic Film Festival in Switzerland and SXSW Sydney. Its festival journey has helped build curiosity around the film well before its arrival in Indian cinemas.
Directed by Bhargav Saikia and written by Harsh Vaibhav, Bokshi has reportedly been developed over several years, with extensive shooting carried out across Sikkim's forests and scenic locations. The film is produced under Lorien Motion Pictures, with its long development period allowing the filmmakers to build an atmospheric horror story rooted in folklore rather than simply using the supernatural as a backdrop.
The trailer makes one thing clear: Bokshi is not interested in offering a comfortable journey. It takes a young protagonist, places her in an ancient and mysterious landscape, and slowly pulls her toward a terrifying secret connected to her own past. With its combination of folk horror, coming-of-age drama, feminist mythology and mountain atmosphere, the film could offer something refreshingly different to horror fans when it hits theatres on October 9.
For audiences looking beyond the usual horror formula, Bokshi certainly deserves a spot on the radar. The forests of Sikkim, an unexplained ancient site, a mysterious witch and a teenager confronting a terrifying destiny make for an intriguing cinematic cocktail. Now, after its festival success and the arrival of the official trailer, the real question is simple: are you brave enough to enter the world of Bokshi?
