After spending years away from the spotlight, Shazahn Padamsee Kanakia is back, but not quite in the way audiences might expect. She travelled to Europe, met artists who mentored her, worked on vocal techniques, learned the technical side of music, picked up the piano and explored song writing.

The result? A huge bank of songs that have been sitting patiently while Shazahn worked on finding her sound. "I have a huge bank of songs; this is just the beginning," she says. And that line is perhaps the biggest clue that Raatan Kalliyan is not being treated as a one-off experiment. For Shazahn, this is the first public step into a musical world she has spent a decade preparing for.

Her perfectionism, however, has been both her superpower and her biggest obstacle. "I get stuck in that loop of perfectionism—thinking, ‘Is this good? Will people like it? I don’t know... No, no, no, let’s not do this one; let’s work on something new.’" That cycle continued for years as she created, collaborated and then decided that the time wasn't quite right to release the music.

But eventually, the music had to come out. Raatan Kalliyan is the result of Shazahn finally deciding that perhaps perfection should not stand between an artist and an audience. After ten years of learning and creating, she is now ready to let listeners into the world she has been building quietly behind the scenes.

There is also a deeply personal side to the story, particularly when it comes to the people who helped her believe in the journey. Shazahn speaks warmly about her husband Ashish Kanakia and the role he plays in her life. "He is my biggest supporter; he is my best friend. He wants my dreams to come true even more than I do myself," she says.

"Life becomes very exciting when you have the right person," she says.

In many ways, it mirrors her own creative journey, where love, family and support have helped her move past fear and finally share something she has kept close for years.

Her mother Sharon Prabhakar has also remained a crucial part of that support system. A celebrated pop singer of her generation, Sharon has watched Shazahn's musical evolution from close quarters and has been her emotional anchor throughout. From waking up to help her practise piano at midnight to encouraging her musical ambitions, Sharon has never stopped believing in her daughter's voice.

And now, after ten years of being a student, Shazahn is ready to graduate into the spotlight. "It’s been ten beautiful years of being a student and creating beautiful music—and there’s so much more to come," she says. Raatan Kalliyan may be her first official musical release, but judging by the mountain of songs waiting in the wings, this is hardly the end of the story.

The actress is no longer simply returning to the circuit; she is returning with a whole new identity. With a decade of music behind her, Sharon Prabhakar cheering from the sidelines and Ashish Kanakia standing firmly in her corner, Shazahn Padamsee seems finally ready to press play.
