Imphal, Aug 24 (SocialNews.XYZ) Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh on Monday assured representatives of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) affected by ethnic violence that his government would address their issues and take necessary steps for their rehabilitation and resettlement.
The Chief Minister met representatives of six different groups of IDPs at the Chief Minister’s Bungalow in Imphal. He assured them that all the issues raised would be addressed and said the state government was sincerely working towards rehabilitation and resettlement of the displaced people.
Khemchand Singh informed the IDP representatives that the Imphal–Dimapur (Nagaland)–Guwahati National Highway‑2 has been opened to all communities and public transport services along the vital highway have resumed smoothly. He said the reopening of the highway and resumption of public transport would help resolve various problems faced by the IDPs.
The meeting was attended by State Home Commissioner N. Ashok Kumar and the Deputy Commissioners of all districts housing the IDPs. During the meeting, the representatives raised issues related to resettlement and other grievances before the state government.
The IDP representatives appreciated the Chief Minister for taking the crucial initiative to open NH‑2 and resume public transport services along the Imphal–Dimapur–Guwahati route. The resumption of services has provided an important connectivity link between Manipur and neighbouring Nagaland and Assam, facilitating the movement of people and essential commodities.
Following the outbreak of ethnic violence on May 3, 2023, the state government established more than 300 relief camps in the Imphal Valley and hill regions to shelter over 60,000 men, women and children displaced by hostilities. More than 260 people were killed, around 1,500 injured, and over 70,000 displaced after violence broke out between the Meitei and Kuki‑Zo communities following a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ organised in the hill districts to protest against the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe status.
