Kolkata, Aug 24 (SocialNews.XYZ) West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Monday said hearings of applications for citizenship under the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019, will be completed soon.
He informed that so far the state government has issued certificates to 23,000 people out of 2.30 lakh applicants.
Addressing a news conference at the state secretariat Nabanna, Adhikari said, “We will complete hearings for the CAA soon. All eligible refugees, including new applicants, in addition to the 2,07,000 applications currently pending, will be given official certificates of Indian citizenship after completing the hearings quickly.” He added that necessary directives had been sent to district magistrates.
Meanwhile, Adhikari said Governor R.N. Ravi had given his nod for the West Bengal Public Safety and Control of Anti‑Social Activities Bill, 2026, which enables the arrest of those attacking police and recovery of costs for public property damage. A notification was issued during the day. The bill was passed by the Assembly recently.
“A part of the act has come into effect in West Bengal from today. No one will be given a discount if government property is destroyed. Three times the compensation will be collected for the destruction of government property, that too with interest. Quick action will be taken if there is an attack on the police,” he said.
Adhikari dismissed allegations made by former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee about the Annapurna Yojana allowance not being provided to women. He said the state government had already sent financial assistance directly to the bank accounts of more than 1.46 crore eligible women. He claimed the money had been distributed without political or religious discrimination.
On Monday afternoon, Banerjee went live on social media and alleged that after promising to double the allowance before the Assembly election, women were now being deprived by imposing conditions and complications.
Countering her, Adhikari said, “Our government does not discriminate against any religion. Under this scheme, money has already reached the accounts of about 19 lakh Muslim families.” He criticised the previous Trinamool Congress government, saying such words did not fit those who had deceived people for political reasons.
Reacting to the list of eligible and ineligible people in the Annapurna Yojana, Adhikari said scrutiny was being done as per government rules. He noted that about 4.5 lakh women had filed complaints regarding applications, and each was being investigated carefully, with action taken accordingly.
