Congress targets MP govt over inflation, education; announces campaigns

Bhopal, Aug 20 (SocialNews.XYZ) Madhya Pradesh Congress President, Jitu Patwari, on Thursday accused the BJP-led state government of failing to address rising prices, farmers’ concerns and deficiencies in the education system, and announced a series of campaigns to highlight the issues.

Patwari said the Congress would give the government eight days to take concrete decisions on improving the education system, failing which, party workers would visit schools across the state as part of a ‘Dastak’ campaign.

He demanded that Chief Minister Mohan Yadav issue a White Paper on the condition of schools and higher education institutions in Madhya Pradesh.

“Education is an issue above politics. The government should engage with the Opposition and all sections of society, present the actual condition of the state's education system and prepare a concrete action plan for improvement,” Patwari said while addressing a press conference.

Under the proposed campaign, newly-formed Panchayat Congress Committees would visit schools and document issues related to teacher availability, school buildings, basic facilities and students' problems, Patwari said.

The findings would be highlighted through social media and brought to the notice of the chief minister, education minister and chief secretary, Patwari said.

He added that if the government failed to respond, the Congress would organise cyclothons across all divisions of the state to create awareness about the importance of education and press for reforms.

Patwari also targeted the Centre and the state government over inflation, alleging that rising prices of essential commodities had increased the burden on households.

He stated that prices of soybean oil had risen by around 12 per cent, groundnut oil by 10 per cent and mustard oil by nearly 20 per cent. He also referred to increases in prices of sugar, milk and pulses.

“The farmer is selling his produce at a low price, while the consumer is buying the same product at a high price. This contradiction raises serious questions over the government's agricultural and market management policies,” Patwari said.

He alleged that farmers were not receiving remunerative prices for their produce and claimed that promises of bonuses had not been fulfilled.

Patwari also questioned the government's claims regarding prohibition in religious cities and alleged that illegal liquor trade and home delivery of liquor continued in the state.

He said the Congress would launch a campaign against alleged corruption, illegal liquor trade and spurious alcohol.

The Congress leader also said his party would take to the people issues discussed at the Congress Working Committee meeting, including inflation, prices of essential commodities, delimitation and alleged Chinese encroachment.

“The Congress will continue to fight as the voice of the people on issues of inflation, unemployment, education, farmers, corruption and law and order,” Patwari said.

He also paid tribute to former Prime Minister, late Rajiv Gandhi, recalling his contribution to Panchayati Raj, voting rights for 18-year-olds and the information technology and telecommunications sectors.
