Calcutta HC stays merit list of police constable recruitment

Kolkata, Aug 19 (SocialNews.XYZ) A single-judge bench of the Calcutta High Court on Wednesday imposed an interim stay on the publication of the merit list for the recruitment of police constables initiated during the previous Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress regime.

The notification for recruitment of 12,000 police constables was issued in 2024. A petition was filed at the Calcutta High Court alleging irregularities in the recruitment process.

After prolonged hearings, Justice Amrita Sinha imposed an interim stay on publishing the merit list until September 30.

While the notification was issued in 2024, the written examination was conducted in 2025. The interview process was completed by February this year, when the previous regime was still in power.

Petitioner Sudipto Chakraborty claimed that the recruitment process did not follow guidelines on reservation for Economically Weaker Sections (EWS).

The legal complications surrounding the recruitment began before the recent West Bengal assembly elections earlier this year, in which the Trinamool Congress faced a landslide defeat.

The Calcutta High Court had earlier sought the view of the new Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government led by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on the matter.

With the interim stay now in place, it remains to be seen how the new state government will approach the issue. Recruitment controversies were a major feature of the previous Trinamool Congress regime, including the cash-for-school-job cases.

Recently, CM Adhikari publicly stated that he was witnessing the devastation created by the previous regime in every sphere he examined.
