“I am a fan of both Padel and Pickleball. I play the sport myself. I started recently, and trust me, the game is amazing,” Sana said while talking about her connection with the sport. She added that she was at the tournament specifically to support the Game Changers Lions and was hoping to see the team make it through after reaching the semi-finals.
Sana’s enthusiasm did not stop at cheering from the sidelines. She admitted that she has recently started playing pickleball and has quickly become a fan. For someone who is already enjoying one of the fastest-growing racquet sports, watching professional padel seemed like the perfect excuse to discover another game and perhaps pick up a new racket soon.
When asked about the growing popularity of these sports in India, Sana offered a thoughtful take. “I’m not sure if it’s entirely new to India; I feel like people have been playing it, but there wasn't much awareness about it before. Now, that information is easily accessible and available,” she said. Her point highlights how social media, professional leagues and celebrity interest are helping bring relatively niche sports into the mainstream conversation.
Sana may already understand the basics of padel, but there is one small problem: she has never actually played it. “I don't play Padel, but I do play Pickleball, so I’m a Pickleball enthusiast,” she said. However, she is clearly curious. Sana revealed that she planned to watch the match and hoped seeing the professionals in action would inspire her to give padel a try.
And who knows, perhaps that first attempt is closer than she thinks. Padel combines elements of tennis and squash and is played on an enclosed court, making it fast, tactical and seriously entertaining to watch. With professional competitions bringing international players to India, the sport is also finding a bigger audience beyond traditional tennis fans.
The World Padel League event certainly had plenty of star power to help create that buzz. Sana was joined by Monalisa and several other celebrities at the NSCI Dome in Mumbai, where the sporting action unfolded alongside the glamour and excitement of the entertainment world.
The Game Changers Lions have also given fans plenty to cheer about, featuring international padel stars including Paula Josemaria and Bea Gonzalez. For Sana, however, the evening was about more than watching big names compete. She was there as a genuine sports enthusiast, supporting her team while getting a closer look at a game she might soon try herself.
So, while Sana Makbul may currently be firmly on Team Pickleball, padel appears to have caught her attention. If watching the World Padel League inspires her to step onto the court, the next celebrity sporting crossover could be Sana trading her pickleball paddle for a padel racket. For now, though, she is happy to cheer, learn and enjoy the game from the sidelines.
