Chennai, Aug 19 (SocialNews.XYZ) Heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms is likely to lash Chengalpattu, Villupuram and Cuddalore districts on Wednesday, the Regional Meteorological Centre said, as a weak low-pressure circulation persists over Tamil Nadu’s coastal belt.
In its latest weather bulletin, the department said the atmospheric system prevailing in the lower levels was expected to create favourable conditions for rainfall across several parts of the State.
Apart from the three districts where heavy rain has been forecast, moderate showers are likely at isolated places in Tiruvallur, Tiruvannamalai, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Mayiladuthurai, Pudukkottai, Sivaganga, Madurai, Dindigul and Theni districts. The spell of rain is expected to be accompanied by thunder and lightning in some areas. Residents have been advised to remain cautious during thunderstorms and avoid taking shelter under trees or near weak structures.
The forecast points to contrasting weather conditions across Tamil Nadu, with rain likely over the coastal and some southern districts even as interior regions prepare for a rise in daytime temperatures.
According to the weather department, maximum temperatures in the state’s interior districts could remain up to four degrees Celsius above normal during the next four days. The increase could result in hot and uncomfortable conditions, particularly during the afternoon.
People, especially children, senior citizens and those working outdoors, have been advised to avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, remain hydrated and take necessary precautions against heat-related illnesses.
In Chennai and its suburban areas, the sky is expected to remain partly cloudy through the day. Moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning may occur in some parts of the city during the evening or at night.
While widespread disruption is not anticipated, sudden downpours could lead to waterlogging in low-lying neighbourhoods and affect traffic movement during peak hours. Motorists have been urged to exercise caution, particularly on roads where visibility could be reduced during intense spells.
The weather department is continuing to monitor the atmospheric circulation and is expected to issue further updates if the system strengthens or rainfall activity increases. Local authorities have also been asked to remain alert in districts covered by the heavy-rain forecast and take precautionary measures wherever necessary. Residents have been advised to follow official weather bulletins and avoid relying on unverified information circulated through social media.
