Idiots Trailer: Dave Franco And O’Shea Jackson Jr. Get Dragged Into A Wild Rehab Road Trip Gone Wrong

IFC has dropped another official trailer for Idiots, the upcoming comedy that looks ready to turn a simple rehab transfer into an outrageous, completely unhinged road trip. Led by Dave Franco and O’Shea Jackson Jr., the film follows two spectacularly unqualified men who think they have landed an easy job, only to discover that transporting a wealthy and deeply problematic teenager is anything but straightforward. With its absurd premise and increasingly chaotic situations, Idiots is shaping up as one of the summer’s more offbeat comedies.

Franco and Jackson Jr. play Mark and Davis, two fumbling chaperones hired to escort spoiled rich kid Sheridan to rehab. What should have been a routine assignment quickly falls apart as Sheridan, played by Mason Thames, proves to be far more difficult — and potentially dangerous — than either man could have imagined. The trailer turns their journey into a succession of bizarre encounters, bad decisions and escalating disasters, with the two men constantly struggling to keep their increasingly unpredictable passenger under control.

Mason Thames appears to be having a particularly wild time with the role, playing Sheridan as a teenager whose privileged upbringing has done little to prepare anyone around him for his behaviour. Known for The Black Phone and How to Train Your Dragon, Thames gets to explore a completely different side of his acting range here. His chemistry with Franco and Jackson Jr. looks central to the comedy, with the trio creating a dysfunctional combination that seems destined to make every stop on the journey worse than the last.

The film also boasts an intriguing supporting cast, with Kiernan Shipka, Nicholas Braun and Peter Dinklage joining the madness. Their presence adds another layer of unpredictability to a story that already appears to operate on the principle that absolutely nothing will go according to plan. Instead of offering a conventional road comedy, Idiots seems determined to push its characters into increasingly ridiculous situations while keeping the humour firmly on the darker and more chaotic side.

Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Macon Blair, Idiots was previously known as The Shheads*. Blair also wrote the screenplay from a story he developed with Alex Orr, giving the film a distinctly personal comedic voice. The movie premiered as part of the Sundance programme, where the pairing of Franco and Jackson Jr. was highlighted as one of its strengths, particularly their portrayal of two men who are completely out of their depth.

Idiots is scheduled to arrive on August 28, 2026, giving audiences one more outrageous comedy to look forward to before the summer winds down. With two incompetent chaperones, one increasingly unhinged teenager and a rehab trip that appears destined for disaster, the film has all the ingredients for a gloriously messy ride. If the new trailer is anything to go by, Mark and Davis may have accepted the worst job of their lives — and audiences are likely to have a very good time watching them regret it.
