New Delhi/Bengaluru, Aug 12 (SocialNews.XYZ) A political controversy erupted after a mobile phone was recovered from the barrack of former JD(S) MP from Hassan, Prajwal Revanna at Bengaluru's Parappana Agrahara Central Prison, as the Congress questioned how a convicted rape accused could gain access to a prohibited device inside the high-security facility and demanded strict action against him.
A phone was found in the barrack of Revanna, who is serving a life sentence at Bengaluru's Parappana Agrahara Central Prison in connection with a rape and sex video case, during a six-hour search operation conducted by Central Crime Branch (CCB) officials.
The recovery has triggered fresh questions over prison security and the alleged possibility of influential prisoners receiving preferential treatment.
Revanna is the grandson of former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda and son of JD(S) MLA H.D. Revanna and the nephew of Union Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy. The recovery of a mobile phone from Prajwal's barrack has raised fresh questions over security arrangements and alleged VIP treatment of influential prisoners inside the high-security prison.
The Congress questioned how a rape convict could obtain a mobile phone inside the jail and suggested that Revanna may have used his political connections to gain access to the device.
Speaking to IANS, Congress MP Pramod Tiwari says, "His father is a former minister, and his grandfather was the Prime Minister of the country. They consider themselves to be above the law. The way he treated women, the more it is condemned, the less it is. Now that he is in jail, he is violating the law there as well. Strict action must certainly be taken against him."
Speaking to IANS, Congress MP Jebi Mather said, "What Prajwal Revanna has done, how he abused women or how he used women as an instrument, everything is on record. Now, what has happened in the jail is not acceptable. This needs to be seriously looked into: how it happened. Maybe political connections were used. So, this needs to be seriously looked into."
The raid on Tuesday, which covered the barracks of high-profile prisoners, including actor Darshan, his girlfriend Pavithra Gowda, Prajwal Revanna and others, reportedly led to the recovery of around 10 mobile phones along with chargers and a pen drive.
The Android mobile phone was reportedly found hidden under Prajwal Revanna's bed. The barrack housed Prajwal and another convict, Pratap Rai. Following the recovery, the Parappana Agrahara police registered an FIR and began an investigation into how the prohibited device entered the prison and who had been using it.
Pratap Rai has been named as accused No. 1 and Prajwal Revanna as accused No. 2 in the case. Police are investigating whether the mobile phone was being used by Prajwal or Rai.
The incident comes days after prison authorities conducted searches in the barracks on August 6, when no mobile phone was reportedly found in Prajwal's possession. Following Tuesday's recovery, officials have been directed to establish how the phone reached his barrack and who supplied it.
