Ram Gopal Varma Announces Police Company With Harshvardhan Rane As Daya Nayak

Ram Gopal Varma is returning to the gritty world of crime and Mumbai’s underworld with his next film, Police Company, which is being produced by T-Series. The filmmaker unveiled the title along with a provocative tagline, “It Is More Dangerous Than D Company,” immediately setting the tone for a story that looks at the thin and complicated line between power, policing and organised crime. The film will feature Harshvardhan Rane in the role of real-life Mumbai encounter specialist Daya Nayak, with RGV promising a huge ensemble cast whose details will be revealed later.

Varma explained the idea behind the title by drawing a distinction between an institution and a criminal organisation. According to him, the police is an institution, while an underworld gang can evolve into a company built around money and power. He believes that when an institution is given extraordinary powers, there is a danger that it can gradually start functioning like a company of its own. It is this provocative thought that forms the foundation of Police Company, giving the upcoming film a distinctly RGV-style crime narrative.

The filmmaker's story is inspired by one of the most turbulent periods in Mumbai's underworld history. Varma recalled how Dawood Ibrahim, after eliminating many of his rival gangs, expanded his gang into what became known as D Company before leaving for Dubai and placing Chhota Rajan in charge of operations. The eventual split between Dawood and Rajan created a major vacuum in Mumbai's criminal world, with several gangs competing for supremacy and criminal activity escalating across the city.

According to RGV, the deteriorating situation also attracted young men from states such as Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Bihar into the Mumbai underworld. As the system struggled to contain the growing gang wars, a special police squad was created. Varma's film takes inspiration from that period and, in particular, from the experiences of Daya Nayak, who became one of the most recognised names associated with Mumbai's encounter era. The filmmaker is now bringing that world to the screen through a fictionalised cinematic treatment inspired by real events and personalities.

Harshvardhan Rane's first glimpses as Daya Nayak suggest a dramatic transformation for the actor. In the working stills shared by Varma, Rane appears intense and battle-ready, sporting a rugged look while holding a firearm. The images immediately give the impression of a character operating in a dangerous environment where every decision could have life-changing consequences. RGV followed the first reveal with three additional pictures of Rane, further building curiosity around his portrayal of the celebrated police officer.

What makes Police Company particularly intriguing is the question at the heart of its title. The film appears poised to explore what happens when institutions entrusted with extraordinary authority begin operating in an environment where power, violence and survival constantly collide. With RGV behind the camera and Harshvardhan Rane stepping into the shoes of Daya Nayak, the project promises a hard-hitting crime saga rooted in one of the most controversial chapters of Mumbai's history.
