FCRA Bill ‘unconstitutional’, says Congress MP KC Venugopal; BJP hits back

New Delhi, Aug 9 (SocialNews.XYZ) Amid the ongoing debate over the proposed Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026, that is yet to be tabled in the Parliament, Congress MP KC Venugopal said on Sunday that the party is firm in its opposition to the "unconstitutional bill".

However, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) questioned the reason for which the Congress is opposing the Bill while accusing it of attempting to change the demography of the country.

Speaking to reporters, Congress leader Venugopal said: "...It (The FCRA Bill) is targeting minorities, because the Union government's motive is very clear. We are not going to allow this type of 'anti-constitutional' bill to be passed. This is what our stance is."

Questioning the reason for the disagreement by the Congress for opposing the Bill, BJP spokesperson RP Singh asked: "Why is Congress opposing the FCRA Bill?"

"(Congress is opposing the Bill) because they want to change the country's demography. They want religious conversions to take place in our country, and that is why they are opposing it. In reality, they want to work with foreign forces to change the country's demography and do politics," he told IANS.

He also added: "We expect the Opposition to understand that your protests have their place. However, in the interest of the country, the Bills should be passed. Whether it is the Bill related to judges, the FCRA Bill, or the Delimitation and women's reservation Bill, all those Bills that are in the interest of the country should be debated and passed."

Meanwhile, India on Friday rejected comments made by a section of the international community, including a US lawmaker, on the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act Amendment (FCRA) Bill, stressing that legislative matters concerning India are internal affairs of the country on which decisions are taken by the Parliament.

Addressing a bi-weekly media briefing in New Delhi on Friday, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal noted that several nations, including the United States, regulate the flow of foreign funds.

"We have seen the comments; Legislative matters concerning India are our internal affairs on which decisions are taken by the Parliament of our country. I would also like to point out that there are several nations, including the United States, which regulate the flow of foreign funds," said MEA spokesperson Jaiswal while responding to a media query.
