Kolkata, Aug 6 (SocialNews.XYZ) Gold and diamond jewellery valued at over Rs 1 crore was seized at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International (NSCBI) Airport in Kolkata on Thursday, leading to the arrest of one person, police officials said.
According to officials, the consignment, which also contained ruby- and emerald-studded ornaments, was recovered from a domestic cargo shipment during a security check at the airport. Preliminary estimates suggest that the value of the seized gold jewellery alone exceeds Rs 50 lakh, while the market value of the diamonds is believed to be significantly higher.
The arrest was made after airport authorities and police grew suspicious of the individual who arrived to receive the consignment. Acting on the suspicion, police detained him at the airport and subsequently recovered the jewellery after interrogation. The police have not revealed the name of the person who went to get the shipment.
Investigators are now probing the origin of the shipment, its intended destination, and the possible involvement of a larger smuggling network. The accused has been taken to the NSCBI Airport Police Station for questioning. Police are also trying to identify those who instructed the receiver and determine whether others were involved in the operation.
"A person has been arrested with a huge quantity of gold and diamond jewellery. He is being interrogated, and a case has been registered against him. The investigation is focused on establishing the purpose of transporting these items and their intended destination," a senior officer of the Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate said.
The recovery of jewellery worth more than Rs 1 crore from a domestic cargo consignment has triggered heightened security measures at the airport. Authorities have intensified surveillance and reinforced monitoring of passengers and cargo movement as the investigation continues.
The Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate has launched an investigation into the incident.
