Kolkata, Aug 6 (SocialNews.XYZ) The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the disproportionate assets case against former and arrested Trinamool Congress councillor Debraj Chakraborty on Thursday filed a 15-page chargesheet at a district court in North 24 Parganas.
Chakraborty, a former councillor in Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation and husband of former Trinamool legislator Aditi Munis, has been accused under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, including Section 111 (punishment for organised crime).
The chargesheet was filed 35 days after Chakraborty was arrested from Purulia district on July 1, while he was on the run.
Public prosecutor Bibhas Chatterjee told the Barasat district court that during the investigation, the SIT obtained evidence linking Chakraborty to extortion.
“The chargesheet has been submitted based on that evidence. An important stage of the investigation has been completed. The government wants to move towards settlement of the case by starting the trial process quickly. That is why a request is being made to the court to start the trial quickly,” he said.
The statements of 11 witnesses have been recorded in the chargesheet. The prosecutor informed the court that a supplementary chargesheet may be submitted later if required.
The district court rejected Chakraborty’s bail plea on Thursday.
Police had started an investigation against Chakraborty and Aditi on charges of undeclared assets. It is alleged that Aditi, the then Trinamool MLA from Rajarhat-Gopalpur constituency, and her husband transferred assets worth at least Rs 100 crore anonymously and in the names of relatives and acquaintances before the 2026 assembly elections.
Chakraborty, known to be influential in Bidhannagar, faces allegations of assets disproportionate to income, concealment of assets and money laundering.
Aditi has been accused of understating her assets in the election affidavit she filed in the recently concluded West Bengal assembly polls, in which she was defeated.
