Rajkot, Aug 3 (SocialNews.XYZ) All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Rajkot has successfully performed its first complex lumbar spine surgery, marking the launch of advanced spine surgery services at the institute and expanding access to specialised spinal care for patients in Saurashtra and across Gujarat.
The milestone procedure was carried out by the Department of Orthopaedics on a 78-year-old woman who had been suffering from severe lower back pain for the past two years.
She also experienced persistent pain in both legs and significant weakness, leaving her unable to walk more than a few steps without severe discomfort and affecting her daily life.
Following a detailed clinical examination and radiological assessment by the institute’s senior faculty and super-speciality specialists, the patient was diagnosed with lumbar canal stenosis, a condition in which narrowing of the spinal canal compresses the spinal nerves.
The disorder can cause lower back pain, leg pain, numbness, weakness and difficulty in walking.
The patient underwent a multi-level lumbar decompression and spinal fixation surgery, a technically demanding procedure that requires advanced surgical expertise, prolonged operating time, specialised techniques and the coordinated efforts of an experienced multidisciplinary team.
The surgery was led by Kulbhushan Kamboj, Head of the Department of Orthopaedics, with surgical assistance from Harshil and Hardik.
The anaesthesia team, comprising Vikramvardhan, Anita and their colleagues from the Department of Anaesthesiology, managed anaesthetic care throughout the operation.
Officials said the procedure was carried out under the guidance and encouragement of Executive Director L. N. Dorairajan, with support from the hospital administration.
The patient’s condition improved significantly following the surgery. She was able to walk independently on the fourth day after the operation and was discharged from the hospital on the tenth day after her condition stabilised.
AIIMS Rajkot said the successful procedure marked another step in its efforts to provide advanced super-speciality healthcare services.
The institute added that the achievement in spine surgery is expected to improve access to treatment for patients with complex spinal disorders in Saurashtra and other parts of Gujarat.
It also said it is working to introduce minimally invasive spine surgery and endoscopic spine surgery in the near future.
According to AIIMS Rajkot, these techniques are expected to enable surgery through smaller incisions where appropriate, resulting in less tissue damage, reduced pain, quicker recovery and shorter hospital stays.
Congratulating the medical team on the successful surgery, Executive Director L. N. Dorairajan said the institute would continue working to provide advanced healthcare services to patients.
