Bhopal, Aug 3 (SocialNews.XYZ) Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav on Monday sought to play down the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) defeat in the Datia Assembly by-election, saying the party accepted the people’s verdict with humility while asserting that one setback did not alter its overall electoral dominance in the state.
The Congress retained the Datia Assembly seat, with its candidate Ghanshyam Singh securing 66,757 votes against BJP’s Ashutosh Tiwari’s 60,741 votes to register a victory by a margin of 6,016 votes.
Reacting to the outcome, Yadav said the BJP respected the mandate delivered by the electorate and would review the reasons behind the defeat.
He stated that the Datia seat was earlier with the Congress and had remained with the Congress, adding that both parties had presented their views before the people during the campaign.
“We humbly accept the public mandate and will analyse the reasons behind the result,” he told reporters.
While acknowledging the loss, Yadav maintained that the BJP had improved its performance in the constituency compared to the 2023 Assembly election, when senior BJP leader and then Home Minister Narottam Mishra lost the seat to Rajendra Bharti.
The Chief Minister said the BJP secured around 1,700 more votes in the by‑election than it had polled in the 2023 Assembly polls, indicating that the party had expanded its support base despite failing to wrest the seat from the Congress.
Seeking to put the Datia result in perspective, Yadav cited the BJP’s recent electoral successes in Madhya Pradesh and said the outcome of one bypoll should not be viewed in isolation.
He pointed out that after the 2023 Assembly elections, the BJP created history by winning all 29 Lok Sabha seats in Madhya Pradesh for the first time, retained the Budhni Assembly seat after Shivraj Singh Chouhan became a Lok Sabha MP, won the Amarwara by‑election in Chhindwara from the Congress, and recently secured all three Rajya Sabha seats.
The Chief Minister, however, did not refer to the Vijaypur Assembly by‑election held in 2024, where BJP minister Ramniwas Rawat was defeated by the Congress.
Yadav further said the BJP would treat the Datia verdict as an opportunity for introspection and organisational strengthening.
“We respect the people’s decision. The party will review the outcome, rectify shortcomings and contest future elections with greater strength,” he added.
