Kolkata, Aug 3 (SocialNews.XYZ) A Kolkata-based businessman has lodged a complaint with the police, alleging that he is being targeted by the notorious Bishnoi gang.
The police said on Monday that the businessman has allegedly been receiving phone calls and voice messages from foreign numbers for some time. A demand of Rs 5 crore has been made. The businessman approached Bhowanipur police station in panic. Officers have started an investigation into the matter.
The businessman is a resident of Sharat Bose Road in Bhowanipore. He told the police that he first received a call from an international number on June 30. The caller claimed to be a member of the Bishnoi gang and demanded Rs 5 crore.
The businessman further alleged that he has been continuously receiving calls and voice messages in the following month. At one point, he claimed that he and his family members were threatened with death if he did not pay the money demanded.
The police started an investigation after receiving the complaint. The Special Unit of Kolkata Police has already been given charge of the investigation. The police have informed that it is being investigated whether the call was really made by Bishnoi gang members or someone else is behind it.
It is worth noting that last year, Mumbai police arrested a person who had demanded Rs 1 crore from comedian Kapil Sharma in the name of Lawrence Bishnoi’s associate Goldy Brar.
However, police investigations revealed no direct link between the arrested individual and the actual Bishnoi criminal network.
The Bishnoi gang is a transnational organised crime syndicate led by jailed Indian gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, known for contract killings, extortion, and international drug trafficking.
The 33-year-old kingpin directs operations using smuggled cell phones from maximum-security prisons in India.
The gang operates extensively across India, Canada, the United States, and parts of Europe, utilising decentralised local cells and encrypted messaging apps.
