Ahmedabad, July 30 (SocialNews.XYZ) The Ahmedabad City Crime Branch on Thursday arrested four men accused of posing as police officers to extort money from common citizens, cracking a case in which a passer-by was allegedly forced to transfer Rs 1.6 lakh after being threatened with a fabricated criminal case.
According to the Crime Branch, the incident took place on the night of July 22, when the victim was travelling from Jashodanagar to the Narol area. Investigators said the accused intercepted him on the road and falsely identified themselves as police personnel.
They allegedly accused the victim of engaging in immoral activities at a hotel and threatened that a police case would be registered against him, his family would be informed, and the matter would be publicised in the media.
Police said the victim was then taken to a deserted location in the Maninagar area, where the accused allegedly forced him to transfer Rs 1.6 lakh online by scanning a QR code.
Following the registration of an FIR at Isanpur Police Station, the Ahmedabad Crime Branch launched an investigation using confidential informants, human intelligence inputs and technical surveillance.
The probe led to the arrest of four accused identified as Mohammad Yasin alias Paipaya Qureshi, 36; Anwarul Haq alias Babu Majra Ansari, 36; Sakir Hussain alias Pintu Tahir Hussain Sheikh, 38; and Salman alias Bhaijan Qureshi, 28.
During the operation, police recovered Rs 1.3 lakh in cash, two motorcycles allegedly used in the offence and a mask bearing the Gujarat Police emblem. The total value of the seized property has been estimated at Rs two lakh.
The case has been registered at Isanpur Police Station under Sections 127(2), 204, 140(3), 308(2) and 54 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Police records show that three of the arrested men have previous criminal cases registered against them.
Mohammad Yasin has several cases dating from 2015 to 2025, including offences relating to extortion, robbery, impersonating a public servant and other provisions of the Indian Penal Code, Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Gujarat Police Act.
He has also previously been detained under the Prevention of Anti-Social Activities (PASA) Act.
Sakir Hussain has earlier cases registered at Vatva Police Station, while Salman has previous cases registered at Madhupura and Isanpur police stations.
The four accused have been taken into custody, and further legal proceedings are underway.
