Jaipur, July 25 (SocialNews.XYZ) The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed authorities to immediately implement measures to restore the ecological health of Mansarovar Lake in Bhilwara, Rajasthan, following allegations of encroachment and the discharge of untreated wastewater into the water body.
The directions were issued by the Central Zone Bench, Bhopal, comprising Justice Sheo Kumar Singh (Judicial Member) and Sudhir Kumar Chaturvedi (Expert Member), while hearing Original Application No. 15/2026 (CZ), Public Power and Awareness Society, Bhilwara vs. State of Rajasthan & Others.
The petition alleges that encroachments around the lake and the inflow of untreated wastewater have adversely affected the environmental and ecological condition of Mansarovar Lake.
During the hearing, counsel for the Rajasthan State Pollution Control Board (RSPCB) informed the Tribunal that an Action Taken Report (ATR) had been submitted. The State of Rajasthan also appeared before the Bench, which directed certain corrections in the reply filed by the State.
The Tribunal instructed all remaining respondents who have not yet filed their responses to do so within two weeks.
Considering the ongoing monsoon season, the NGT emphasised the need for immediate implementation of the recommendations made by the Joint Committee and the State’s Expert Member.
In particular, the Tribunal ordered the mechanical and manual removal of aquatic weeds from the lake surface to improve its ecological condition without delay.
The Bench also directed authorities to implement all other recommendations contained in the committee’s report in letter and spirit within the stipulated timelines.
The matter has been posted for the next hearing on September 15, 2026, when the Tribunal is expected to review the progress made on the implementation of its directions.
