Gujarat: Dial 112 emergency service handled nearly 10 lakh calls in first 10 months

Ahmedabad, July 18 (SocialNews.XYZ) Gujarat Police's integrated 'Dial 112 Jan Rakshak Emergency Response Service' has handled 9,90,130 emergency calls since its launch on September 1 last year, with nearly 45 per cent of complaints resolved at the scene by Jan Rakshak teams, according to official data covering the period up to July 16.

The single emergency number was introduced by the Gujarat government under Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel to provide citizens with access to multiple emergency services through one helpline instead of separate numbers for police, medical assistance, fire services, women's safety and child protection.

When a citizen dials 112, the police call centre alerts the nearest Jan Rakshak team, which responds without being restricted by police station jurisdiction.

According to the government, the system has reduced emergency response times, with assistance typically reaching people within seven to eight minutes.

Ahmedabad Police Commissioner Anupam Singh Gahlaut said the integrated service had replaced the need to remember multiple emergency numbers.

"The state government has started the 112 service. Earlier, people had to remember different numbers, i.e. 100 for the police, 108 for health emergencies, a separate number for the fire service, and different numbers for other emergency services. Now, all these services are available through the single number 112," he said.

Official figures show that of the 9,90,130 calls received between September 1, 2025 and July 16, 2026, 8,76,810 were related to police matters, 56,551 to medical emergencies, 17,977 to fire incidents, 37,929 to women's safety, 659 to child security and 204 to disaster-related emergencies.

Navneet Patel, a beneficiary of the service, recounted an incident in which a wall collapsed near his home, trapping several of his relatives.

"Some time ago, a wall collapsed near my house, and two to three of my relatives got trapped under it. At that time, we dialled 112. Within a short while, the 112 Jan Rakshak team arrived. The fire brigade and the 108 ambulance service were also there, and they immediately helped us get medical treatment," he said.

Jaswant Prajapati, Chief Operating Officer of EMRI-GHS Gujarat, urged citizens to use the service responsibly.

"We also appeal to everyone that if they witness an emergency, they should immediately dial 112 without hesitation. At the same time, we request people to use this number only when it is genuinely necessary so that it is not misused and no person in need is deprived of the service," he said.

Ahmedabad Deputy Commissioner of Police (Control) Reema Munshi said the service was available to anyone requiring urgent assistance.

"Whenever any senior citizen, woman, child, or accident victim needs assistance, they should simply dial 112. A Jan Rakshak vehicle will immediately reach them to provide help," she said.

The integrated emergency response system operates round the clock, bringing together police, ambulance, fire and other emergency services through a single emergency number.
