Patna, July 21 (SocialNews.XYZ) Making a significant announcement in the Bihar Legislative Council on Tuesday, Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary said that three long-closed sugar mills in Gopalganj, Sakri, and Raiyam will soon resume operations.
Responding to a short-notice question raised by MLC Shashi Yadav, the Chief Minister informed the House that the state government is in the final stages of signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with a central government agency to facilitate the revival of these mills.
He said the government is actively working to restart the closed sugar mills, describing the move as an important step towards strengthening Bihar’s rural economy.
According to him, reviving the mills is expected to generate employment opportunities in the region, improve market access for sugarcane farmers, boost local economic activity, and restore industrial infrastructure in the affected districts.
The government stated that operations at the three mills will begin after the MoU is finalised.
The Legislative Council also witnessed a discussion on the maintenance of Bihar’s Nal-Jal (Tap Water) Scheme.
Members from both the ruling alliance and the opposition demanded that responsibility for maintaining the scheme be returned to ward members, arguing that elected local representatives are more familiar with the needs and problems of their respective areas.
Janata Dal (United) MLC Dinesh Prasad Singh supported the proposal, saying local representatives can ensure quicker maintenance and better accountability.
Responding to the debate, PHED Minister Sanjay Kumar Singh explained the existing maintenance mechanism.
Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary assured the House that the government would seriously examine the proposal after a joint meeting between the Panchayati Raj Department and the Public Health Engineering Department (PHED).
The Council also discussed the growing concern over substance abuse in Bihar through a calling attention motion.
Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) MLC Sunil Kumar Singh alleged that the use of narcotic substances such as cannabis, opium, and heroin is increasing in the state and warned that it poses a serious social challenge.
His remarks triggered strong objections from members of the ruling alliance.
Several MLCs, including Art and Culture Minister Pramod Kumar, opposed his comments, particularly references to drug consumption near religious places, leading to a heated exchange between treasury and opposition benches.
The discussion reflected growing political concern over drug abuse while highlighting differences between the government and the opposition on the issue.
The proceedings concluded with the government reiterating its commitment to addressing both industrial revival and public welfare concerns while assuring the House that the issues raised by members would be examined further.
