Kolkata, July 20 (SocialNews.XYZ) West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Monday announced that he would make public later in the day the findings of the Justice Susanta Chatterjee Commission, constituted by the previous Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress government to probe the deaths of 13 Youth Congress workers in police firing during a protest rally on July 21, 1993.
The Chief Minister announced this while speaking in the Assembly on the opening day of the extended budget session.
Incidentally, the report will be made public just a day before the two current factions in Trinamool Congress, the “original but minority” faction led by Mamata Banerjee and the “rebel but majority” faction led by expelled party legislator Ritabrata Banerjee, will be observing Martyrs’ Day to commemorate the deaths in police firing.
“The previous Trinamool Congress government formed the July 21 Commission after coming to power in 2011. It was headed by Justice Sushant Chatterjee (retired). I will make that report public. It will be clear to what extent the previous government had implemented the recommendations of Justice Sushant Chatterjee (retired), and to what extent they have not. I will present that report to the people of Bengal, based on evidence,” the Chief Minister said addressing the floor of the House on Monday afternoon.
On July 21, 1993, Mamata Banerjee, who was then associated with the Congress, conducted the protest march to the erstwhile state secretariat, Writers’ Buildings.
Late Jyoti Basu was the Chief Minister of the ruling Left Front government in West Bengal. The Youth Congress procession faced police obstruction before it reached Writers’ Buildings. The police allegedly resorted to firing on the marching protesters, killing 13 Youth Congress workers.
Since then, Mamata Banerjee, first as a Congress leader and then as Trinamool Congress supremo, had been observing Martyrs’ Day on July 21 every year to pay tribute to those who died. Congress also holds separate programs on this day.
However, the Martyrs’ Day programme had also been marred with controversy. Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer Manish Gupta was the West Bengal Home Secretary when the police firing took place on July 21, 1993.
However, Gupta joined the Trinamool Congress before the 2011 assembly elections, contested as a party candidate, and also became a member of the Mamata Banerjee-led cabinet. Subsequently, he became a Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha member. Recently, he announced his decision to quit politics.
