Guwahati, July 20 (SocialNews.XYZ) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday said the state government is closely monitoring the flood situation in Upper Assam and is committed to ensuring that relief and rescue measures reach affected people without delay.
The Chief Minister said rescue operations are in full swing across the flood-hit districts and are being supervised by a team of ministers deployed to oversee the ground situation and coordinate relief efforts with the local administration.
"We are committed to provide all relief measures swiftly to the people affected by the floods. The situation is being closely monitored by Team Assam on the ground," Sarma said in a post on X.
As part of the government's response, senior minister Keshab Mahanta visited the flood-affected districts of Jorhat and Sivasagar on Monday to assess the situation and review ongoing rescue and relief operations.
Mahanta inspected flood-hit areas in Teok, took stock of the prevailing conditions and interacted with residents affected by the deluge.
He also reviewed the progress of relief measures being undertaken by district authorities and disaster response agencies.
Meanwhile, Minister Susanta Borgohain visited flood-affected areas under the Bokota-Lakuwa Mandal in the Demow Assembly constituency, where overflowing rivers have inundated Lonporiya and several nearby villages.
Borgohain said the district administration has launched rescue operations to evacuate affected residents and shift them to safer locations.
He added that rescue operations would continue in other inundated villages and that all necessary arrangements had been made to ensure the safety and well-being of affected families.
The state government has deputed ministers to different flood-affected districts to monitor rescue operations, coordinate with local authorities and ensure timely distribution of relief materials.
The flood situation in Assam has deteriorated over the past two days following heavy rainfall, affecting tens of thousands of people across several districts.
Rescue teams, including personnel from the Army, Assam Rifles and other disaster response agencies, remain engaged in evacuation and relief operations as authorities continue to monitor the evolving situation.
According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), the flood situation deteriorated significantly, with one person reported dead in Sivasagar district.
The latest casualty has taken the flood-related death toll in the state this year to five. ASDMA data showed that more than 57,100 people have been affected across Charaideo, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Sivasagar, Tinsukia and Udalguri districts.
The number of affected people has risen sharply from around 24,000 recorded a day earlier. Charaideo remains the worst-affected district, with nearly 24,000 people impacted, followed by Dhemaji, where over 22,000 residents are affected.
Dibrugarh has reported more than 4,000 affected people, while floodwaters have also affected parts of Jorhat, Sivasagar, Tinsukia and Udalguri.
