MP to table UCC Bill in Monsoon Session: Only monogamous marriages to be recognised, says CM Yadav

Bhopal, July 17 (SocialNews.XYZ) Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister, Mohan Yadav, on Friday said only those having one marriage would have the right to reside in the state, under the proposed Uniform Civil Code (UCC), which his government will introduce during the Monsoon Session of the Assembly beginning July 20.

Yadav made the announcement while addressing a gathering after inaugurating newly constructed Sandipani Schools at Jhinjhri and Bahoriband in Katni district.

"Under the new UCC law, only those having one marriage will have the right to reside in Madhya Pradesh," the Chief Minister said.

He said the proposed law would be applicable to people of all religions.

"With the blessings of Lord Ram, Madhya Pradesh is moving towards one nation, one Constitution, one flag and one law. During the Monsoon Session of the Assembly, we will bring the Uniform Civil Code for people of all religions," Yadav said.

The Monsoon Session of the Madhya Pradesh Assembly will be held from July 20 to July 25, and the BJP government is expected to introduce the UCC Bill during the session.

Yadav had earlier also said that the proposed UCC would recognise only one marriage in the state.

The state government had subsequently constituted a committee to prepare the draft of the proposed law, which has submitted its report.

If the Bill is passed, Madhya Pradesh will become the second state after Uttarakhand to implement a Uniform Civil Code.

The Chief Minister also said the state was moving ahead with the objective of implementing a common legal framework for all citizens.

The announcement assumes political significance as the BJP has consistently backed the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code, a key promise in its election manifesto, while the issue has remained part of the party's broader national agenda.

During the programme in Katni, Yadav also inaugurated two Sandipani Schools and addressed students, highlighting the importance of education and cultural values before reiterating the government's commitment to bringing the UCC in the upcoming Assembly session.
