Guwahati, July 17 (SocialNews.XYZ) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for dedicating the redeveloped Majbat Railway Station, saying the historic 117‑year‑old station has been transformed with modern passenger amenities under the Centre’s Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS).
In a post on X, Sarma said the station’s redevelopment reflects the Centre’s commitment to strengthening railway infrastructure in the Northeast.
He wrote: “Grateful to Adarniya Narendra Modi Ji for dedicating the redeveloped Majbat Railway Station. This 117‑year‑old station has been transformed with modern amenities under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. Across Assam, 50 stations are being upgraded under this initiative.”
Majbat Railway Station, located in Assam’s Udalguri district, is among the oldest railway stations in the region. The upgraded station has been equipped with improved passenger facilities, modern infrastructure, and enhanced amenities to provide a better travel experience.
The redevelopment has been carried out under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, the Centre’s flagship programme to modernise railway stations across the country by improving passenger amenities, accessibility and station infrastructure while incorporating local architectural features.
Majbat Railway Station, established around 1909 during the British era, is one of the oldest railway stations in Assam and has served as a vital transport hub for more than a century.
Located in present‑day Udalguri district, the station played an important role in connecting the tea‑growing regions of northern Assam with major commercial centres, facilitating the movement of tea, timber, agricultural produce and passengers.
Its strategic location also strengthened connectivity between remote areas of the state and the rest of the country. Over the decades, the station evolved into an important socio‑economic lifeline for the region, supporting trade, education and healthcare access for people from Majbat and neighbouring areas.
Despite retaining its historical identity, the station had long awaited modernisation. Its redevelopment under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme seeks to preserve its 117‑year‑old legacy while equipping it with contemporary passenger amenities, symbolising the blend of heritage conservation and infrastructure development in Assam.
According to the Chief Minister, the initiative is not limited to Majbat alone; 50 railway stations across Assam are currently being redeveloped under the scheme. The large‑scale upgradation is expected to improve passenger convenience, strengthen rail connectivity and support economic activity across different parts of the state.
Railway infrastructure in Assam has witnessed significant expansion in recent years through station redevelopment projects, electrification of rail routes, doubling of railway lines and the introduction of new train services aimed at improving connectivity within the Northeast and with the rest of the country.
The redevelopment of Majbat Railway Station is part of the Centre’s broader efforts to modernise railway infrastructure and provide world‑class facilities to passengers while preserving the heritage value of older stations.
The Assam Government has maintained that improved railway infrastructure will play a key role in boosting tourism, trade and regional connectivity, particularly in the state’s interior districts.
