Musafir Cafe Writer Sharanya Rajgopal on the 'Gunahon Ka Devta' Connection: "It Was Divya Prakash Dubey's Tribute"

The trailer launch of Netflix's upcoming romantic drama Musafir Cafe in Mumbai saw creator and writer Sharanya Rajgopal join lead actors Vikrant Massey, Mahima Makwana, Vedika Pinto, and the rest of the cast to discuss the much-awaited adaptation of Divya Prakash Dubey's bestselling novel. During the interaction, Sharanya addressed a question that many readers have long wondered about—the connection between Musafir Cafe and the iconic Hindi novel Gunahon Ka Devta.

Readers of Hindi literature have often noticed that the central characters Chander and Sudha share their names with the unforgettable protagonists of Dharamvir Bharati's literary classic Gunahon Ka Devta. Asked whether she had read the celebrated novel before adapting Musafir Cafe, Sharanya admitted that her introduction to the characters came through Divya Prakash Dubey's book instead.

"No, I hadn't. In fact, I read Musafir Cafe first, and then I discovered Gunahon Ka Devta," Sharanya revealed. The writer explained that the similarity in character names was never intended to suggest a narrative crossover between the two stories. Instead, she described it as a heartfelt literary homage by novelist Divya Prakash Dubey.

"I knew that when Divya Prakash used those character names, he was essentially paying a tribute to them in this story. So, while there is no direct narrative link between the two stories, I hope that the iconic status those characters achieved continues to bless our characters and our show as well."

Sharanya also reflected on the lasting impact that powerful storytelling leaves on readers and viewers, saying that memorable characters often live on long after the story has ended. "I feel that the soul of a great story never truly leaves the reader; similarly, when we see a great story on screen, we strive to ensure it stays with the audience forever."

She added that the team's biggest aspiration while adapting Musafir Cafe was to create characters that audiences would continue to remember. "I believe we tried to create three truly memorable characters with Musafir Cafe, so blessings from all quarters—from every source—are welcome."

Based on Divya Prakash Dubey's bestselling Hindi novel, Musafir Cafe explores the complexities of modern relationships, first love, heartbreak and the emotional challenge of moving on. At its heart is Chander (played by Vikrant Massey), a software engineer with literary ambitions whose life is forever changed after an intense relationship with Sudha (Vedika Pinto). Years later, he attempts to rebuild his life in the hills, opening the Musafir Cafe and finding comfort in a new relationship with Preeti (Mahima Makwana)—until his past unexpectedly returns.

Created and written by Sharanya Rajgopal and directed by Ruchir Arun, the romantic drama also features Adil Hussain, Rajeev Siddhartha, Loveleen Mishra, and Sadiya Siddiqui in key roles. The series also marks Vikrant Massey's debut as a producer under his banner, Homemade Movies.

With its literary roots, emotionally layered characters and a story centred on love, loss and second chances, Musafir Cafe aims to bring one of Hindi literature's most beloved contemporary novels to life while respectfully acknowledging the timeless legacy that inspired its unforgettable character names.
