Haveri, June 30 (SocialNews.XYZ) Regarding the violence that broke out during the Kara Hunnime (Full Moon Day) festival celebrations in Naregal village of Haveri district over the bursting of firecrackers near a mosque on Monday evening, the Adur Police have registered an FIR against 26 persons, police said on Tuesday.
A quarrel that started over the bursting of crackers during a bull procession organised as part of Kara Hunnime on Monday escalated and led to a group clash, resulting in injuries to six people at Naregal village of Hangal taluk in Haveri district.
Based on a complaint filed by Harish, son of Ramappa, the police have booked 26 accused, including Khwaja, Bhashasab, Mehboob Ali and Mahboobsab, police said.
Responding to the incident, Home Minister Priyank Kharge said, "The violence occurred during celebrations involving a group of youths near a mosque. The police are investigating the matter, and the injured are being treated at the hospital. The police will investigate what exactly transpired."
Police stated that the case has been registered under various provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Sections 189(2) and 191(2), and further investigation is underway.
Following the incident, tension prevailed in Naregal village, prompting the police to deploy heavy security to prevent any untoward incidents. The police are investigating the exact cause of the clash, the sequence of events that led to the violence, and the role of those involved in the assault.
The police said the situation in the village is currently under control and appealed to the public to maintain peace and refrain from spreading rumours.
Following the violence, Adur Police stepped up security arrangements in Naregal village. More than 20 police personnel have been deployed, and officials said the situation is presently peaceful. Efforts are also underway to trace and apprehend the accused.
Preliminary investigations have revealed that the village's annual bull-running event was organised as part of the Kara Hunnime festival, as in previous years.
During the celebrations, farmers burst firecrackers as they ran their bulls near a mosque. It is alleged that a man identified as Bhashasab Gowndi objected to the bursting of firecrackers near the village mosque and questioned why crackers were being set off in its vicinity. Police are investigating whether this objection led to the subsequent clash, police said.
The issue has taken a political turn with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders strongly reacting to the development. BJP State President and MLA B.Y. Vijayendra visited the village and also met the injured persons at the district hospital on Tuesday.
