Patna, June 17 (SocialNews.XYZ) A young man injured during a police encounter in Bihar’s Bhojpur district on Wednesday morning succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment, a police official said.
The incident occurred in Bilauti village, within the Shahpur police station limits.
According to a press release issued by the Bhojpur Superintendent of Police (SP), police received information around 9 a.m. that Bharat Bhushan Tiwari, son of Kashinath Tiwari and a resident of Bilauti village, was allegedly brandishing a pistol and firing shots in the air.
Acting on the tip-off, teams from Shahpur Police Station and the Special Task Force (STF) rushed to the spot to verify the information and take necessary action.
Police officials stated that the accused was repeatedly asked to surrender, but he allegedly refused and continued firing intermittently at the police team.
Authorities said his actions posed a serious threat to both law enforcement personnel and local residents present in the area.
To bring the situation under control, STF personnel equipped with bulletproof jackets moved closer and attempted to cordon off the area. During the operation, the accused allegedly opened fire on the police team.
In response, police personnel fired in self-defence, and one bullet struck the accused in the leg.
The injured man was initially admitted to a local hospital and later referred to Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) for advanced treatment. However, he died during treatment, officials confirmed.
Police recovered a pistol, two live cartridges, a magazine, and two spent shell casings from his possession. Further legal proceedings are underway.
According to police sources, Bharat Bhushan Tiwari had previously posted photographs on social media allegedly displaying firearms and had purportedly issued threats against the Jagdishpur Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM). Police reportedly attempted to apprehend him in connection with those incidents.
Officials further claimed that during Wednesday’s operation, the accused allegedly held a pistol pointed at a sub-inspector for nearly 20 minutes and threatened to shoot police personnel if they attempted to intervene.
The police have initiated a detailed investigation into the circumstances surrounding the encounter and the activities of the deceased. Further action will be taken based on the probe's findings, officials said.
